About this listen

What connects a massacre in a Blockbuster video store in 1999 with the murder of four teenagers 15 years later?

It's New Year's Eve of 1999 when four teenagers working late are attacked at a Blockbuster video store in New Jersey. Only one inexplicably survives. Police quickly identify a suspect, the boyfriend of one of the victims, who flees and is never seen again.

Fifteen years later, four more teenagers are attacked at an ice cream store in the same town, and again only one makes it out alive.

In the aftermath of the latest crime, three lives intersect: the lone survivor of the Blockbuster massacre, who is forced to relive the horrors of her tragedy; the brother of the fugitive accused, who is convinced the police have the wrong suspect and FBI agent Sarah Keller, who must delve into the secrets of both nights to uncover the truth about the night-shift murders....

Critic Reviews

"A terrific thriller, tautly written with compelling characters. I was totally hooked." (Peter James)

"Wow, this is crime fiction at its best. Instantly immersive, pacey and propulsive and full of surprises. Alex Finlay is the real deal, believe me." (Lee Child)

overall I was engaged in the story but a bit thrown by the rushed way things came together at the end.
Was a little saddened with the outcome though the epilogue tried to lighten things somewhat.

Engaging story

Twists and turns, 1999 nostalgia, VCRs, :) not highly detailed but satisfying. Entertaining. More please.

nice (word that popped into my head at the end)

It's really hard to follow this interesting plot when it's narrated so badly. The narrator for the character Keller reads every sentence like it's a CSI tagline, rendering simple lines comical and dramatic lines flat. I'd have laughed if I hadn't spent so much money for the experience. The character Ella is narrated by someone who reads every line like it the emotion crescendo in a soap opera, less annoying, could even have tolerated it if the other characters were narrated well, but still annoying. The more the narrators attempt to hijack the story as a stellar performance of theirs, the less it sounds like narration and the more it sounds like a college performance done on a budget. I've noticed that overly dramatic performances are more common in American narrators, in general I wish someone could tell them that narration is about being the voice that reads in the mind, not stealing the show in a Broadway production, but this particular narration is even more frustrating than usual, it's intolerable. For me, I don't care how good the story is, it's totally ruined by the forced emotion injected into every line.

Interesting story, unfortunate narration

I listened to this book in 2 days. It’s a great story line, suspense and I love how the performers captured each character. Highly recommend to any crime fiction fans.

Great Read, couldn’t stop!!

I enjoyed listening to this book on a long drive. It was deep enough to have a few twists, but not too complicated to follow. I would listen to other books by this author.

Twisty plot

I was hooked from the first paragraph. The story was skilfully stitched together, weaving the past and present into a riveting story.

Brilliant
