About this listen

An utterly addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist

The rules are there to keep their family safe. But what happens when they get broken…?

Fiona Fisher lives a quiet and contented existence. A former nurse who married Jason, the doctor of her dreams, she is now a mother to his two daughters and living in the sort of cosy village home she’d always wished for.

Life is pretty much perfect in every way. As long as they stick to their rules…

Everyone in bed by eight o’clock sharp.

No loud music, no news on the TV, no social media. The house phone for emergency use only.

Locks on every door. No leaving the house.

And absolutely no talking about the past.

But one day, someone starts breaking the rules…

This insanely twisty psychological thriller will have you gripped. Anyone who held their breath as they raced through The Housemaid, The Wife Between Us and The Girl on the Train needs to drop everything and start listening!

Samantha Hayes’s The Marriage Rules is a gripping psychological thriller that hooked me from the first page and kept me on edge until the very end. I listened to the audio version, which used dual narration that was excellent, bringing the story to life with an engaging and immersive performance. The story follows Fiona Fisher, who marries Dr. Jason Hewitt and moves to a seemingly perfect countryside home. But the strict household rules, no screens, early bedtimes, locked doors, and a ban on mentioning the past quickly turn quirky into unsettling. As Fiona’s unease grows, so did mine, with the tension building masterfully.

The use of dual timelines adds depth, dropping clever clues that kept me guessing (and often wrong). A shocking mid-book twist flipped my understanding of the story, forcing me to stop and rethink everything. The themes of control, family secrets, and trauma are woven in skilfully, making the characters linger in my mind long after finishing. The claustrophobic, anxious atmosphere pulled me into Fiona’s turmoil, creating a chilling yet captivating experience, enhanced by the superb dual narration.

For fans of fast-paced domestic thrillers with jaw-dropping twists, I highly recommend it!
