The Swarm is coming!

This time, enemy science vessels study us as Hive Masters gather hundreds of thousands of starships for an avalanche invasion.

Instead of facing massed bug fleets in hopeless battle, we have a desperate plan: use a Builder nexus, create a hyper-spatial tube and send suicide-ships thousands of light-years into Swarm territory. There, our ships must find and destroy the nexuses that are the only way back home, all in order to stop the bugs from using the nexuses to reach Human Space.

Despite the grim mission, Captain Maddox is determined to bring his people back. But deep in the Sagittarius Spiral Arm, disaster strikes. All alone in the stellar night, the crew must face a primordial alien that even the Builders feared and the Swarm avoids.

Now begins a deadly battle as Maddox, the crew and Galyan are pitted against a horror of legendary evil as a Swarm battle fleet waits to annihilate the victor.

Disappointed

This book is convoluted, causing it to be confusing, in my opinion! Plus I don't like the backstabbing and intrigue that is pervasive in this book! Additionally, I am tired of Mattox's belligerent attitude, and lack of forethought. The author consistently causes him to get into situations with no apparent escape, and then he escapes! Maybe I am tired of this series, it just goes on and on! I must prefer a trilogy!

Incredibly good instalment; a little rough though.

I usually 5-star everything for this series, but there were a very few but very real issues with this one. Firstly, it seemed like some mistakes slipped into the final product of the narration, as though missed in editing - a skipped word or two clipped out twice in the second half, incorrect speaker tags two or three times. Also, it is Yon Soth or Yog Soth? The alien name seemed to switch an N for a G back and forth a few times which left me unsure what the real name was. Also the last part of the story seemed like it was just sorta... tacked on. It felt more like it should've been the start of the next book. Still an incredible series, and a worthy listening instalment therein. This one just came off a lot more rough than the others in these ways. I gave the performance four stars instead of three only because despite the mistakes and such, Mark Boyett delivered some of his most intense character acting yet. Once or twice I got goosebumps from his performance in that aspect, and that's really worth something.

This story line is getting very old.

This story line is getting very old. The same thing over and over nothing new. Agree with another review he just keeps pulling from earlier books. This is the last book I listen too.

It was ok

Way too many religious references IMO. Also, why must every woman Maddox meets have her attractiveness gauged?!!

creativity diminishing

Auther seems to be relying, more and more, on past creativity of first few books in the series. I certainly couldn't do better, but that said, I'll be moving on.

Running out of steam

Even though ( or maybe because) this latest book ties most of the loose ends up, there isn't much left to cover. Some of the writing in the middle act seemed endlessly procrastinated. (About Mako21s preparation and journey). It would appear that there is at least one more story to tell for Maddox, i hope it goes out with a bang.
