Publisher's Summary

A stand-alone novel set in the Ark Royal Universe!

The first major alien offensive against Earth has been blunted, winning humanity time to deploy new weapons and prepare new tactics as Earth's space navies prepare to take the offensive. But the enigmatic aliens have plans of their own - a full-scale attack on Earth that will either win the war in a single stroke or lose it.

The stakes have never been so high. The fate of humanity itself is in the balance. And, as battle rages across the solar system, as humanity finds its back pushed firmly against the wall, millions of people - military and civilian - struggle for survival, knowing that victory will come with a very high price....

And defeat will be the end of everything humanity holds dear.

yes it was the longest day and book

I absolutely love the ark Royal story, but Christ I do not like the side characters whom in my opinion, take up way too much of the story. unfortunately this continues on in the following books, where politics and less interesting side characters are the barbone of the storyline. please go back to the thrilling days off the first ark royal books, and not this political semi sci-fi.

Molly....hmmm

The "Molly" sequences were overdone. It seemed as though you were trying to write for the sake of sensationalizing. This type of writing only serves to make your book what we used to refer to as a "dime" novel. I did not like this book in the collection.

Great job telling the story

I just wish this book would have came earlier in the series. Filled in a lot of unanswered questions. Tells the good and bad of people when in bad situations. Also a lot of the side details that you might have been wondering about.

Meh book in otherwise decent series.

If you delete mentions of:

Gritting teeth
Shit hitting the fan
Society breaking down
Unnecessarily nude women

Then this book would be about half its length.

I enjoy the “ark royal” series though I don’t enjoy his other stuff. His nutty libertarianism is too rampant in the rest of his work. I hope he’s not going to ruin this series with more mediocre books like this.

skip this one,

bad and not part of the main story arc. seems like a needless cash grab by the author.

worth a listen if you're a completionist

I like the space battles and dramatic theater, but I'm tiring of the sexual discussions

Solid story

Solid story, very enjoyable. A bit racy at times; not sure that level of detail is strictly necessary for the story, but otherwise quite good.

not so happy

I have very much enjoyed the previous books unfortunately not so for this one I found it more disjointed I know it was meant to bring a lot of the backstory to light but I just found a great deal of it quite boring.

a nice side story.

the only good thing about this story was filling in all those plot holes from the first ark royal story as well as telling the story from all points of view including the aliens. a great addition to the series.

Filled in some of the gaps from books 1 x 2.

Struggling to recall what was occurring aboard Ark Royal all those books ago at the time this was going on on earth. However many gaps were filled in, the fate of Molly for instance was a good story.

This is more Ark Royal 2.5 than 10

I have enjoyed listening to this book. That being said none of the story is needed or adds anything much to the ark royal story as a whole. The book covers the 24 hour period during which the Tadpoles invade the solar system and manage to bombard earth in the crossfire. It ties up some loose ends that didn't really need tying. It give a bit more insight into how Mr Nuttall invisioned the Tadpoles mentality as being which was interesting. The book then jumps a little forward to ark royals return from it's 'Nelson Touch' deployment into enemy space and the political leaders arguing about the future war plans that we know about from book 3, the Trafalgar gambit. All in all, good book, but not adding much to the story as a whole.
