Publisher's Summary

From the critically acclaimed author of Prince of Fools comes the second volume of the brilliant new epic fantasy series The Red Queen's War.

"If you like dark, you will love Mark Lawrence. And when the light breaks through, and it all makes sense, the contrast is gorgeous." (Robin Hobb)

The Red Queen has set her players on the board…. Winter is keeping Prince Jalan Kendeth far from the longed-for luxuries of his southern palace. And although the North may be home to his companion, the warrior Snorri ver Snagason, he is just as eager to leave. For the Viking is ready to challenge all of hell to bring his wife and children back into the living world. He has Loki's key - now all he needs is to find the door.

As all wait for the ice to unlock its jaws, the Dead King plots to claim what was so nearly his - the key into the world - so that the dead can rise and rule.

Superb

I love Mark Lawrence's writing. Highly imaginative & a world he has created that is believable. A complex story that is entertaining and keeps you guessing. If you're sick of waiting for the Winds of Winter to come out, start with Prince of Thorns, work your way through that awesome trilogy & then dive into this trilogy. Can't wait to read the final instalment.
Thank you Mark, excellent as always and perfectly presented by the narrator. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, definitely

Any additional comments?

Most fun in a longtime!

Mark Lawrence’s knack for stories with the anti-hero protaganists hits the ball out the park with Jarlan and it could not have been better narated by anyone else than Sean Ohlendorf. I spent hours laughing my ass off at Jarlan and Snori’s antics. Thank you for a great adventure.

Great

The Liars Key is a great follow up to Prince of Fools, starting a few months after the events of the first book. I really enjoyed it, the main characters develop and we learn more about the history of them, and their families. And the inclusion of a few new ones are interesting and bring a lot to the story. There is more world building too which is very welcome as I find the World this series is set in quite wonderful. Lastly the narrator is excellent, bringing more accents and life to the characters which really increases the enjoyment while listening.

A step up from Book 1!

So, I’m very much in the minority not being utterly in love with Mark Lawrence’s The Broken Empire Trilogy - too dark for me - but I could tell the writing was excellent so decided to give this second trilogy a try. The Prince of Fools kept me entertained, but not enthralled, so I downloaded the second instalment with more of a “let’s see how it goes” attitude, rather than a “I can’t wait for this!” attitude...........turns out that this was the clincher to convert me to a fan :) What a book! What a story! I felt this one had more cohesive rhythm than the first, with plenty of characters to love a lot more than Jalan Kendeth, who I have a strong love/hate feeling towards, and for me these were the crucial elements to keep me listening and keen to find out where this was going. The writing is absolutely superb, with plenty of clever comedy and poetic turn-of-phrase intermingled with each other and the narration is some of the best I’ve heard, comparable to Steven Pacey, Nathaniel Parker and Sean Barrett, all of whom I think are masters at bringing a story to life. Off to download number three.....

If only....

Audible allowed more than 5 stars. In my opinion, the Red Queen's War trilogy is one of the best fantasy series of this century. Genuinely excellent stuff, combined with superb performances by Sean Ohlendorf. Simply excellent.

awesome

unusual characters that you can't help but love with a story line full of action, twists and turns and unforseen circumstances. the character really delve into certain elements of human nature. and to top it off the story has a healthy dose of humour to make it a very awesome story.
