About this listen

Ships are sinking for no apparent reason, carrying hundreds to a dark underwater grave. Strange fireballs race through the sky above the deepest trenches of the oceans. Something is about to show itself, something terrible and alien, a force capable of causing global catastrophe.

I found this story to be utterly captivating from start to finish.
The tone was perfect with plenty of British good humour and a certain twinkle throughout. The relationship between the narrator and his wife was beautifully handled and provided the perfect lens to see the events of the story through.
Some sci-fi from the Cold War Era feels very dated, but this does not.
The actual science it contains feels spot on and authentic, as do the consequences and subsequent reactions of the people and peoples involved.
John Sackville's narration is similarly pitched perfectly.
Loved it.

Another incredible book by John Wyndham. I can see why he’s such a massive influence. Still fresh today. I love the relationship the main characters have. It’s a little shocking how much this seems to be how journalism and politics play out today as well. So concise and clever.

Scarily accurate to climate crisis

John Wyndham has a good understanding of human nature. It touches on many of the crises of our era.

Prescient Story

This book sounds a modern day prophecy for climate change, written in 1953. The melting of the Arctic and Antarctic icecap depicted in the book are our real world to look forward to in the next 50 years.

A prophesy

I read the book years ago, but listening to the story now, I’m startled by how relevant it is to our world now. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. Thanks Audible!!

Such brilliant prose in this story, which is an engaging tale told by an excellent narrator, from the perspective of an investigative journalist couple. Looks a lot at human reactions as a global, mediated society to having to share the planet with another intelligence, and ultimately, that we are beasts of instinct, despite our prominent intellectual potential.

An excellent listen, definitely worth your time imo.
