Publisher's Summary

A mission failed... A civilization on the edge of collapse... A dangerous alliance to save it...

Colonel Mitchell "Ares" Williams has never been one to accept failure. While the outcome on Liberty is a crushing setback to his and the Riggers' chances of salvaging the war, there's no time to waste on regret. After all, the mission wasn't a total loss, delivering an unexpected asset in the wake of their defeat - Liun Tio, aka the Knife, a notorious warlord and enemy of the Alliance whose deep-seated mistrust of artificial intelligence and control over what may be the largest free fleet in the galaxy have made him the most important man alive.

If humanity is going to have a chance to survive the Tetron onslaught, Ares and the Knife will need to find a way to work together. But can the two learn to trust one another enough to bring the power of their joint forces to bear against a common enemy? Or will their fragile alliance crumble beneath the weight of personal motives and divergent goals?

As Mitchell and the Riggers will soon discover, the knife's edge cuts both ways.

great imaginative sci fi

there are no actual aliens in this future......just the consequences of human work....AI gone awol. I think issac assimov is one of this authours heroes. nice to see a different take on time travel and the author doesn't get bogged down in explanations. each book in this series leaves you hanging out for the next installment

Great work Jeffrey Kafer

I am really enjoy listening to Jeffrey Kafer, I picked this series because he was reading them. He could read me pi to the 100th digit and I would probably give him a great review.

I enjoyed the story because it is always promising to be entertained all the way until the end. The only drawback for me is the lack of engineering science, but the story makes up for that with the complex characters, A.I. science and plenty of action.

Same story.....again

Same story over and over. Team finds lost super ship..team loses ship. Like many stories today there is too many side stories. It almost seems as the witer is trying to extend the series. The core story is excellent and maybe a couple side stories or delays, however when you have more side stories than the main objective the story starts to drag.

This is one of my favorite narrators. The book wasn’t great but like the last, it was good, good enough to get the next.

Impossible to rate a single book.

Books 1 thru 3 are superb Military Scifi with a great plot, characters, and nonstop action. Jeffrey Kafer's performance was by far one of the best I have heard.

I had to listen to books 1 and 2 several times because I got distracted by my personal life daily routines. I didn't rate them because I was the problem, not the books, to be fair.

Interesting twists and turns

The books are short and each has interesting twists but the focus doesn’t make it easy to see where the story is going. There are four more books and it is difficult to decide if it it worth four credits.

Bill Mitchell

I can't express enough how much I hate cliffhangers!

The author has done a great job! There is plenty of suspense and action to keep you wanting more without resorting to cliffhangers.

Really likes military

Infantry and pilots in these books are nearly all good people and great at what they do and the center of the book's attention. Everyone else is either background and/or has some irredeemable quality, a drug addict, a pedophile, a turncoat, a guy who'd kill all other humans if it meant he couldn't be recognized as a hero? And whatever characters start out as, that's what they're like forever. I haven't noticed any development. Once I realized that, the story became a lot more mundane. The plot develops, but people don't, especially heroes, heroes who have serious anger management problems, but I think we're supposed to like that about them.

I appreciated that this book moved the story along much more than the last. It still felt like a series of small quests. Each had a fresh feeling, though, kept things interesting.

Similar to the previous book, I enjoyed everything about the narration except the wild fluctuations in volume. He does a lot of mumbling and a fair amount of shouting. Neither is pleasant as a listener.

I liked it, despite the flaws

I'm still curious about what happens next and I will be listening as I get this included in my audible subscription, however the invincible enemy and dire situation is getting a little bit unrealistic and it makes it hard for me to care.

The characters in the book are dumb too. They were not suspicious of a little girl beating up and winning against a space marine who specialises in hand to hand combat might not be a little human girl.

The narrator has a good voice that I enjoy listening to, but has little variety. It makes it hard to differentiate who's saying what. It doesn't help that later on two characters are present with very similar sounding names.

Despite all this criticism, I'm still interested in the vulnerability of the adversary and how the protagonist will overcome them and I am eager to find out the conclusion to the story.

More and more exciting!

I think what I'm liking more and more as this series has progressed, is how much deeper the characters are becoming. As they do more and learn more, it's heartbreaking to go through with them.

Here though Tio aka the kinfe brings some very much needed hope with the thought that he can amass a small army. But as the known worlds lead bad guy there's not much trust for him. It's a hard slog for Mitch and Milli to begin to trust him.

I think what I really like the most about this series is that there are so many real world issues. The fact that the riggers are so broken really makes this work. Watson as a peadophile, and Cormack as a rapist and murderer. I am glad that Mtch did beat his ass, but also felt sorry for him because he knew how badly he'd disappointed the new Colonel... Keeping Watson on is also pretty horrid to think that they're so desperate they have too.

Mitch and Millie also really do deepen their love here. He might not think it, but when she turns up and is alive at the beginning, it's a blessing for them both. They make an amazing team...

A couple of scenes stood out for me. When Millie visits the Knifes daughter, (Min) and where she then kills her to hopefully stop him giving the horrendous and treaturious Tetron a means to get more info off him. I won't reveal who the new traitor is, but wow what a twist, I don't think any of us was expecting that one...

Also really, really felt that Cormack was dead here... half his face missing, but thankfully still alive. I know war is so bad, that things never work out how you want... but I don't want all the Riggers to die...

The ending here was expertly written and had me on the edge of 'the knife' .... but we know what's coming, and that made me really sad...

Again, fantastic narration. M R Forbes has one of the best guys on the job here. I hope he continues to narrate for him! (although Man of War was great too, by Jeff Hays) :)

Last one started and I'm already not wanting to finish it, not because it's horrid, but because I know I won't have any more to listen in on :( so sad...
