He is one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court - but from early childhood Andre Agassi hated the game. Coaxed to swing a racket while still in the crib, forced to hit hundreds of balls a day while still in grade school, Agassi resented the constant pressure even as he drove himself to become a prodigy, an inner conflict that would define him. Now, in his beautiful, haunting autobiography, Agassi tells the story of a life framed by such conflicts.

Toughness has long been held as a fundamental key to achieving peak performance. For generations, we've been taught toughness means bulldozing through—pushing to the point of breakdown—and that showing any sign of weakness is failure. This model of toughness has long been glorified and celebrated. But the truth is, it doesn't work. Steve Magness, a performance scientist who coaches Olympic athletes, now offers a new kind of toughness—real toughness—that can help anyone navigate adversity. Real toughness works with our biology and psychology; fake toughness fights against them.

Fitting for the modern psyche
The book strips back the noise of modern cognition training allowing for the simplistic yet fundamental expression of self to be exposed (this being self 2). A good reminder to remain grounded in any situation and allow our minds to learn and grow. A good commentary for continued mental stimulation and growth. Only criticism is the lack of depth in the role of enthusiasm, as this stoic approach can sometimes be misconstrued as a guide to a passive life (never to high, never to low). Thorough research will suggest otherwise, however, the message to the newcomer short be clear. Allowing self 2 to dominate, does not mean to not show vulnerability and enthusiasm. Quite the contrary in fact!
Good, easy listening.

An insightful point of view to overcoming performance anxiety
Playing piano under pressure has been a great challenge for me. The Inner Game has helped me explore mindfulness in a different way, to not give my inner voice (self 1) control me, but to trust my self 2 when I’m performing. The author relates and explains my trouble, without trying to say something unhelpful, like ‘positive thinking’ and ‘be in the moment’ like I’ve been told countless times in the past.

For anyone who wants to perform
What made the experience of listening to The Inner Game of Tennis the most enjoyable?
I was surprised at how spiritual it sounds to me. It's there, right underneath the surface. The ending anecdote about being stranded in a snow storm, actually brought tears to my eyes, it was really moving...
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Inner Game of Tennis?
Apart from the above mentioned passage, the description of his teaching style vs the traditional one. So eye opening, gentle, and powerful.
Have you listened to any of Dan Woren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not but for a while, I thought it was the author reading it, he commanded the material so well.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The description of self I and self II are so recognizable that it feels like meeting an old friend...yourself, that is.
Any additional comments?
This is the original inner game and I have heard people say that it's the most powerful one. the principles described here are universal to all sports and all activities where performance and pressure play a part, such as for example music. I'm a musician and I'm not going to get the Inner Game of Music. This is the root and the original!

WHAT TO TUNE IN - WHAT TO TUNE OUT
? did you grow up in a culture of achievement and relentless criticism
? as a child, were your shortcomings frequently judged and exposed
? as an adult, do you feel you are, at times, holding yourself back
tim gallwey was a talented tennis instructor in a well-to-do part of california
that may not sound like fertile ground for important cultural observations
but gallwey's patient scrutiny and observation lead him to new and real insights
as his tennis players "...talked to themselves..." gallwey heard 2 competing voices
voice # 1 was berating, belittling, relentlessly scolding and critical
voice # 2 stood chastened and seemed to believe it deserved the reprimand
as you might imagine, voice # 1 can get in the way of exertion and performance
gallwey gives thoughtful practical advice on how to turn voice # 1 down a bit
with that burden lifted, he found his players were able perform to their capacity
the strength of gallwey's book is its' intuitive approachable presentation
timeless truths are delivered as friendly " easy to digest " examples
as you'd expect the book is not about tennis - it's about those inner voices

I have listened to this audio book twice and I have learned a great amount both times. You learn and it also gets you thinking. This book talks a lot about tennis but the principles probably apply to nearly everything in life. Great philosophies, not just for tennis.
Any additional comments?
As a martial arts instructor, The Inner Game of Tennis has helped me understand the body's natural way of learning and how to teach in a way that is more conducive to retained muscle memory. In only a week, I have seen great improvements in how my students are able to pick up complex movements at a much faster rate without as much effort on my part. Even students that have been notoriously difficult to teach, it feels as if I've unlocked their true learning potential. The reality is that I have finally learned to challenge them appropriately through the lessons I have learned from this book. Every instructor, no matter your sport, should read this book.
And I also played out of my mind in my last tennis match!

Excellent
Where does The Inner Game of Tennis rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is probably the first audiobook I've listened to completely.
Have you listened to any of Dan Woren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The narrator gives an impression of understanding his content; he sounds earnest. Pleasant voice.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This book is best absorbed chapter by chapter as there's so much to absorb.
Any additional comments?
As a book, this has to be the best self-development book I've read. It is also, reportedly, the book that started the individual/business coaching revolution in the 70s.

Brilliant (audio)book
Deals with the mental game of tennis so well, from mental attitude towards learning and improving strokes, to your mental approach on court, how counterproductive your 'inner critic' is to your game, and how you should try and achieve 'psychological flow' (ie being 'in the zone'). Particularly good for overly pushy parents coaching their kids who don't realise that berating or yelling at their kids isn't helpful. Highly recommended for any tennis player at any level.

Good concept, dragged out
Very interesting book, well worth a read, but is at least 50% long for the content within.
Also, it is written in a very clumsy style in which the author seems not to understand the use of the word 'they'. Sentences will read "playing someone will be hard when he...", when there is no reason for the masculine to be used. A small thing but a definite distraction throughout.

Exceptional book. Like the Tao Te Ching on X-Games mode. Can’t wait to read other titles by T W Gallwey.

Best book for mental training in sport
Not only for sport, I believe. It’s got so much insights of how we look at ourselves when performing sports, the way we learn, which ultimately can be applied into day to day life. I’ve enjoyed so much listening to this book and kept pausing to take notes, think I’m just gonna order the paperback book now ;).

And I don't even play tennis. The approach presented here is applicable to every aspect of life.
