Publisher's Summary

“Anything is possible for women as we find our voice, honor our identity, work together for a common goal, and stand unapologetically with our arms wide open to the skies in a stance of pride and acknowledgment of the sacredness of the feminine.” (from the preface to the 30th anniversary edition)

The Heroine’s Journey describes contemporary woman’s search for wholeness in a society where she has been defined according to masculine values. Drawing on cultural myths and fairy tales, ancient symbols and goddesses, and the dreams of contemporary women, Murdock illustrates the need for — and the reality of — feminine values in Western culture. This special anniversary edition, with a new foreword by Christine Downing and preface by the author, illuminates that this need is just as relevant today as it was when the book was originally published 30 years ago.

The journey into sacred union within

The Heroine’s Journey weaves many historical stories, events, experiences of women; the quest of the sacred union of the feminine with the masculine - the journey throughout life and rhe ages.
The circle being the energy and symbol of healing this blessed planet - coming into union with each other - all equal with all wisdom. This book is a journey within itself, to and through self; through each other. 🙏✨

An interesting listen

I enjoyed this book, although it seemed a bit repetitive in some of its themes at times (emotional damage = moving away from the feminine to the masculine, or rejection of the feminine). Nor did it seem to 'mirror' the Hero's Journey (as per Joseph Campbell) as fully as I expected. And yet I still enjoyed it - perhaps simply identifying these archetypes of damaged women is a first step in the Heroine's Journey.

An enjoyable listen - the narrator was easy on the ears. And the book wasn't so complex I had to focus solely on it (I listen whilst doing housework, exercise etc). Can recommend if you're interested in feminism, psychology, the growth of girls into women, adolescent development, or even just self-awareness as a woman.
