Sebastian Frost was a man with an interesting reputation. He’d killed 12 giants, eight heroes, a duke, and even a prince. But nobody ever talked about any of that. All they talked about was the deviant, disgusting, detestable Herald of Shalia that shamelessly laid with elves. That was because in the strange world based on game mechanics Frost found himself in, laying with elves was somehow treated like laying with animals. Naturally, they weren’t calling him Herald Frost the giant killer....

The Mad Canadian Squirrel Girl.
I found it quite funny how when she got insane she turned canadian.
while the first bit where the sword spirit introduced the mechanics and world building was the best from a narrative standpoint, ai did enjoy the descent into maddness that hunting did.
from that point it turned from realistic fantasy into unrealistic wish fulfillment.
Its like when you activate cheat mode, it undercuts the feeling of reward yoh feel qhen you overcome a difficult challenge. with the ending extortion meaning very little as the mc dosent really care aboht money anyways.
While I realise there are many satirical elements, It does feel like a bit of a waste to give no growth to the MC's sword after his great introduction.

Refunded it. Now I LOVE It.
I refunded the book when it first released. The first hour gave me the feeling it'd be a poor attempt at an anime style story. However, I purchased it again yesterday on a whim and ended up going without sleep.
The book starts decent, but then just keeps getting better. The characters are fun, I got some laughs and overall had a good time.
Great buy.

disturbing, yet hilarious
the speech pattern for the main protagonist is incredibly annoying, story isnt exciting but rather peaks your interest on what's going to happen next (kinda like the emerelia series) kinda like crackers, dry at the first bite and slowly becomes bearable if you chew it long enough. borderline 4th wall breaking was a nice touch. if you're bored listen to this.

Most Implausible Idiocy You'll Ever Love
Tried to keep this mostly light on the spoilers, but still. LIGHT SPOILERS!
Okay. Lets start right now and say that the story is kinda stupid. All the way through. It silly and stupid. But its so much freaking fun that it worth every stupid moment.
The story can be summed up in a few simple words. "Squirrel girls are awesome. So is murdering giant Beasts. Lucia is exceptionally good at both." The main character is a dunce of epic proportions. She had a sad past that is used relatively often to make up for the fact that literally everything goes right for her. But she's really really funny about it. A lot of the story is Lucia self rationalizing. And not just important things like killing people or stealing, but also unimportant things like like... selling beast... parts... for the best price. Using people, labeling them as encyclopedias so she doesn't have to remember things (because she can't) and several other sub plots that all really make Lucia come alive, despite being completely unbelievable.
The story itself even makes jokes at its own expense, since despite being a relatively crazed murderess, Lucia never really suffers any consequences for her actions, and other characters can't stop noticing that. Rather than a detriment, this becomes more and more amusing as the story goes on.
Somewhere early on, maybe within the first two or three hours, a twist comes that really seems like it might change the whole tone of the story. It does... kind of. Occasionally this leads to some truly emotional bits of listening, but for the most part these are glossed over in light of – Accorn!
The story is silly. But its clearly trying to be, and it really, really works. Every bit of me wants to criticize parts of it for being so... soooo... stupid, but then I realize that I love it for the same reason. Its over-the-top, and it works.
The performance was incredible. Discovering the story has an almost second book already written was nice, but absolutely impossible to read when I know that I could listen to the sequel performed by Mare Trevathan, if I just wait long enough. I don't know why but I never got tired of her shouting "Unrelenting Path of Slaughter: Breaking Blade!" over and over again. Some people might (because it gets used. Alot.) but I found it amusing as hell.
The story has a semblance of plot, that really all centers around Lucia living up to the Godking's Legacy. The romance is cheesy and barely there, but what's there is is adorable. The characters are interesting, the dialogue is often times laugh out loud funny, and the climb to the top is apparently hilariously easy.
Torturing of Wolf Spear Spirits, and "So Gory its Silly" aside, this was a highly enjoyable read. I think another reviewer said "Deadpool-esque type character who doesn't care about murder, but still considers themselves a good person." I'd relate her more to Lina Inverse. If TV Tropes were used to describe her, "Obliviously Evil" would be her defining character trait. That Bruce Lee quote also really seems like it was pure inspiration for this story. "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." You'll get it, if you read.
Lucia isn't a good person. She's practically a villain. But with a pretty amusing array of side characters (especially later in the book), a rather surprising betrayal plus an amusingly twisted goal holding the plot together, and a sheer hilarious propensity for things somehow going right for Lucia when they really really shouldn't, you'll like her anyway.
4/5, and will definitely be buying the sequel.
I should also mention again that the performance was exceptionally good. Not exactly sure if that's a compliment since I'm saying Mare is particularly good at sounding juuuust a bit airheaded, but I am saying that I really enjoyed the narration. :D

This was surprisingly good. It's well written and funny. Thd narration is passed like a baton between the characters which at the beginning of the book is a little annoying but soon fixates on the MC who despite being an idiot who cannot read knows phrases like "deus ex machina".

Loved all 16 hours of it.
This is one of those books that will keep you up at night because you don't want to put it down. Lucia's rags to to riches story is filled with silly motivations, a strong denial, and a slow degradation of her character. Also the predators the scariest creatures in this world are hilarious. the reveal reminded me of the rabbit in monte python's holy grail. Even though its neither a small nor a rabbit. Definitely buy this book. there are fewer better books than this one than I have fingers on my left hand.

Ridiculous and Ridiculously funny
This book is definitely not for everyone. It's over the top and is not what you're looking for if you want a serious read. If your looking for something funny and don't mind some language, innuendo, violence, and a main character who is an about as smart as a squirrel then give it a try. I often had trouble putting it down due to the constant laughs. There are definitely some slower parts but they feel necessary to drive the plot. In the end I gave it 5 stars for how entertaining it was.

give it an hour or two
at first i wasn't a fan of the book. really i dropped the credit because of the cover art for it, sue me cute girls with ears and tails are cute, but when you really get down into the book it really does come alive. i started to really relate to the two MCs, and as they started to care more and more for each other i found that i was as well. I don't often take time to write these, but i really think if you give this time you'll learn to care for these characters as much as i do. I would read more of what this author has to offer. even if the references to Stockholm syndrome was a bit jarring at first first for a fantasy book.

self centered uncaring jerk
so I'm about three and a half hours in. by this point in a book that is this short you're supposed to show at least some redeeming qualities in your main character! instead you get a self-centered uncaring jerk that starves her companions and tries to kill them at every instance. I have never ran into a main character that I've hated this much in a book and I read books where the main character is the bad guy.
just finished this book the main character is a psychopath. If I could give negative stars I would

Great performance, terrible book
No idea how this book is rated so highly. I can develop no empathy for the main character, the book rehashes most scenes from two points of view, and it is sorely predictable and slow. Sure, it's a parody, I get it, just not a good one.

I really enjoyed the progression of the main character. The voice sounds exactly like what I imagine an airheaded squirrel girl would sound like. I hope there's a bit more struggle in the next book but otherwise, I have no complaints. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next volume in audiobook form!

Horrendous main character.
The book on the whole is alright if you want to be introduced to wuxia style growth systems and worlds.
The problem is the main character.
Lucia is the worst character I have ever had the grimace to listen to. I've read quite a few other stories similar to this one and the characters in those have depth and growth that make Lucia apparent as the vapid and shallow character she is.
There is no struggle.
The main character just does what she wants and no-one can stop her. Not at any point. She does things make you want something to stop her, but it never happens.
Characters are set up a villains briefly and then they die.
Rescuing people from danger? No, extorting then as a payment for saving them.
I don't think there is a single likable aspect about her as a character, she doesn't really have friends, just people she uses.
People around her are the interesting characters, but you never really get to explore them.
The books mention adult themes but those themes themselves are on par with the humour of a 14 year old. I know, since I was 14 some 14 years ago.
Get it if you've got a credit. But otherwise I'd say just go read some stuff on a wuxia site.

After reading the description for this book I was worried it would be mediocre at best but I really, very much enjoyed the whole series so far.

A very entertaining story.
I really enjoyed this story and about to listen to book 2. A story about a beast kin who finds a swordspirit and sword. A world with demons, monsters and Prince. Losts of dark humour. Highly recommended. Narrator was excellent too.

Not Your Grandma's Kind Of Story
It's difficult to put into words just what makes this story so good. If I had to condense it all down into a single word? Fun. This is a story meant to make you laugh with its utter absurdity. I started listening to it on a whim back in April when quarantine began while taking walks in the country, and since then I just haven't been able to stop!
That's not to say it's perfect. Part of what makes this story so easy to digest is that the content isn't overly dense or complex. This works in its favor a lot of the time, with multiple characters' P.O.Vs trading off as the story goes on, however the first couple of chapters suffer from major overlaps to the point where it feels like you're listening to the exact same series of events on repeat in full. Fortunately, this stops very early on, and when multiple P.O.Vs are used later, it's more of a relay, bouncing between characters in a fluid continuity to maintain narrative flow.
The protagonist Lucia is utterly Unrelenting in the pursuit of her goals to an undeniably psychotic degree, and the imagery she evokes is striking, to say the least. The plans she comes up with and the lengths to which she'll go for the most minor things create some hilarious situations. Also, she has a truly unique business mind that encapsulates her chaotic nature to a P.
Special mention has to be made to Mare Trevathan for her work bringing the story to life. There's a fairly large roster of characters who are encountered throughout this book alone, but whether it's the frantic Lucia, the deep and gravely Durandal, or the utterly traumatized Encyclopedia, she demonstrates an impressive range and talent in emoting through so many people. She brings the story to another level and is a key reason why this just works.
If you like anime: listen. If you have a warped sense of humor: listen. If you want to try out something completely random and hope for the best: listen. I did, and I've been thoroughly entertained. It's not a literary masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but if you want to have a damn good time and some good laughs at utter insanity, give it a go!
