Publisher's Summary

At 15, Chance Fortunato has seen more evil than most people ever will. Indentured by his father to the demon count Dulka, he's been taught dark magic and forced to do his infernal master's dirty work for eight years. But now Chance has figured out a way to defeat his master and free himself.

His new life with his mother and sister is far from easy, and freedom has its own perils. Normal life is hard enough, but even in a mundane-looking high school, there are paranormal threats from both sides of the mystical fence.

When his new mentor is murdered, Chance knows he is the only one who can track the killer down. To bring his mentor's killer to justice, Chance will have to fight evil on its own terms and discover if that makes him a hero...or a monster.

Loved it!

The narrator did such a great job!
I definitely recommend it's interesting but do be warned some of it is dark and it's not Woke at all this isn't a book for the faint heart. It's going through the prospect of a teenage boy who has a hell of a up bringing.
There is romance but it's more of a magic and realism combined.
If your looking for a happy book this isn't it and as I said it's got a realism violence fantasy. I do recommend if you want to read something dark and different.

It’s alright

Typical teen fantasy, fast paced and engaging. I enjoyed it even if the story line felt a bit tired and done before.

A good series

I found this series engaging and sometimes gripping. It's well written and read. In a coherent 2010s universe, a troubled hero fights to save friends, family, strangers and the world from evil.

It's been an enjoyable diversion for me, though it's not quite perfect. I found just a few moments felt unnecessarily "young adult" even considering we start with a 15 year old protagonist.

A fun book

A fun book for lovers of fantasy. Reminds me of of a sort-of teenage Dresden Files

A cool concept ruined by poor taste

I love books that get a bit wacky. I can forgive subpar technical writing if I'm having fun and the story is still carried through.
I read a lot of reviews on this saying this had some very concerning takes on sex, partically in relation to teen girls. I also read a lot of reviews saying it wasn't so bad, it's just that its from the perspective of a teenage boy and they're horny. I gave it a go because I can over look a lot of stuff for a fun story I'm not going to take to seriously.
I got through the first 3ish hours of this book, which featured some bad takes on woman that I could overlook and move past. But I couldn't move pass the protagonist watching through a window as a young woman is coerced to undress so she can be assaulted as he seesaws between calmly trying to decide if he going to help in anyway and how pretty her matching under set is on her. I got no further than this. Really bad vibes that left me feeling dirty. If there was a narrative purpose or character development that would be prompted by this, I would not be leaving this review. But there isn't. It just happens. And this isn't something you should put into a story just cause, and not in the way it was done.
A great concept that would make a great YA book if written by someone else.
