About this listen

A new age dawns in the kingdom of Eileanan, but not without resistance. Now the Righ, Lachlan the Winged, overturns his dead brother’s decrees against witchcraft. But 16 years of hatred and superstition have cloaked Eileanan in darkness. And though he has won the power of the Lodestar, Lachlan’s rule is challenged by a mere babe - and a civil war erupts.

The flame-haired twins - Iseult the Scarred Warrior and Isabeau the apprentice-witch - must go their separate ways. Iseult to fight side by side with her husband, Lachlan. Isabeau to the Cursed Towers, to master her powers and to find the family she has never known.

One woman battling for a new reign, one woman learning the old ways, their separate threads will twist and turn into a tale of mayhem, mystery, and magic.

Lachlan has the Lodestar and is Rìgh of Eileanan- yet his battle to gain the throne is only the first of many that he and Eileanan must face. He overshadows Iseult a bit. Isabeau shows grit on her quest. Love to hate that Maya> Wish the witches were more powerful.

Good characters

This is a truly well narrated audiobook. Its various characters and cultures are well written and the action and intrigue are multi-layered whilst tying the plot together in an exciting and seamless way. Well worth a listen or a read.

This series sits as well now in 2020 as when it was first published. It has not aged as many do in the fantasy genre. Kate has crafted this magical, beautiful, brutal world with so much depth giving Elle Newlands a flawless book where she has breathed, sang and given form to the characters and story... it's well worth ride
