Publisher's Summary

Qube was designed to die....

As the cheerful childhood NPC companion who helps the [Player] learn the world during the start of the game, it was only natural that the big bad would kill her at the end of the tutorial, kick-starting the [Player] on a quest for vengeance.

The only thing is, no one told her that.... And this particular [Player] doesn’t like to play by the rules. Being a chaos-loving gremlin, he glitches her out of her programming loop and drags her on various adventures. They'll grapple with friendly sharktopuses, evil emperors, and what it means to be a person.

On the way, they pick up equally unlikely party members, with Qube breaking the world in increasingly strange ways as she seeks to be the very best companion ever.

All the while, Qube herself slowly realizes that her reality is not quite what it seems....

Experience the start of a GameLit/LitRPG series about an NPC freed of its programming loop and brought along on a player's journey of adventure and power progression. A loving parody of old-school games, Dungeons and Dragons, and every player who has ever thought, “What happens if I do this?”

The exceptional narration steals the show

I don't know what Soundbooth Theater is feeding its narrators and sound engineers, but the effort put into the voices in this book absolutely blew me away. Not just the voice actors themselves- though all three of them were genuinely a delight to listen to- but also in the more technical side of things, with some characters receiving subtle sound effects along with their lines that really enhanced the experience. Characters would also often react "in the background", laughing or exclaiming while others were speaking, which really helped to bring the party to life.

Speaking of the characters, I really loved the cast, especially the main duo. Qube's dogged, increasingly desperate rationalisation of the strangeness occurring around her was simultaneously very funny and heartbreaking, and although I initially HATED the Chosen One, he definitely grew on me as we learned more about him, and as he learned more about the world he was breaking.

Seriously, if you like gamelit/litrpg then this is a must-buy, especially if you also like the self-aware NPC premise, which statistically speaking you probably do.

Brillig

Evidence of Soundbooth Theater’s narrative team’s ability to have way more hysterical fun when reading of expeditions.
Take one smart chick who is the entire pit crew, medic, supporter, dissenter to a male prize driven, breaker of stuff, chosen one.
So a chick, a dude, a evil wizard, a sexy screamy and eventually a pet are on a fabulous mission to save the world.
Brilliant collection of words, thank you Trevagah with enduring epic eloquence from Annie Ellicott, Jeff Hays, Gary Furlong, very much appreciated people. :-)

Like a High Production Audio Drama

I already loved the story, a semi-litrpg/meta discussion of video games/sci-fi, but the audio book takes the base narrative and turns it into a high budget production.
Multiple talents voice actors doing proper enthusiastic acting rather than a just a monotone narration, audio effects such as Chittering for spiders, lute strumming, etc.
The voices for the bard and chosen one just blow it out of the park for me.
