Publisher's Summary

This set includes all three books in AC Cobble's Cartographer Series. A pair of unlikely investigators walk a dangerous path into the past, uncovering secrets best left alone in this dark, fantasy thriller.

The fate of empire is to crumble from within.

A heinous murder in a small village reveals a terrible truth. Sorcery, once thought dead in Enhover, is not. Evidence of an occult ritual and human sacrifice proves that dark power has been called upon again. Twisting threads of clues lead across the known world to the end of a vast empire, and then, the trail returns home.

Duke Oliver Wellesley, son of the king, cartographer, and adventurer, has better things to do than investigate a murder in a sleepy fishing hamlet. For Crown and Company, though, he goes where he’s told. As the investigation leads to deeper and darker places, he’ll be forced to confront the horrific spectres rising from the shadows of his past. When faced with the truth, will he sacrifice what is necessary to survive?

Samantha serves a Church that claims to no longer need her skills. She’s apprenticed to a priest-assassin that no one knows. Driven by a mad prophecy, her mentor has prepared her for a battle with ultimate darkness, except, sorcery is dead. When all is at stake, can she call upon an arcane craft the rest of the world has forgotten?

The fate of empire is to crumble from within. Do not ask when, ask who.

Great story and characters.

An engaging story that follows its two main heroes through their trials. Though some of the plot is predictable in places it also has some twists and turns to keep you guessing. I would like to see a sequel written on the Cartographer. Only complaint is the chapter numbering system is too difficult to navigate.

Steampunk meets epic fantasy

It’s refreshing to “read” something that is familiar enough to be accessible yet different enough to be engaging. An interesting narrative with relatable, flawed characters — human, in other words.

The 2nd and 3rd books become more violently and sexually explicit (both of which felt a bit devicey) and I missed the easy, natural voice of book one. But not so much that I stopped listening. I just assumed publisher or reader pressure.

Would love to see an illustrated beastiary to go with the world maps — so many hints at great creatures.

I’m short, I felt I got my $$ worth with the very enjoyable book one so I didn’t mind the convoluted plot or explicitness misfires in books 2 and 3.

Strong narrator too. Easy on the ear. Barely a fumble.

Incredible

Incredible, truly incredible. Every time I thought I had picked what was going to happen, how it was going to end I was proven wrong. Even when I found myself infuriated at the character's stupid blindness I couldn't stop listening, I truly wanted to know how it ended. And I found it to be a great ending. To the author I would say, I would love to hear more adventures of the cartographer.

Narration was fabulous and the story was compelling

Strong female characters and a great narrative that avoided cliches. Great author! I look forward to reading more of Cobble’s work.

Great start - but went too long

I was absolutely charmed by the first book. It really got me, and really I think it should have stopped there. In fact, as a reader you could stop there, because after that I found the main character became increasingly less likeable - almost a worse version of himself. The books began to meander and I began to lose interest, finding my mind wander or I'd fall asleep and not rewind.

However, I'm not sure it's the book's fault entirely.

Simon Vance is in my top 3 narrators - I have loved his work so much, bringing lacklustre fantasy to life - but with this series, it feels like maybe it stretched his characterisations further than he could go. There were characters that sounded very similar, which was very difficult when they appeared in scenes together. I've not come across this with Simon before, and it's very odd. Maybe there were too many old men in the same book?!

Overall, the first book is great. Listen, and if you enjoy it, then see how you go. Maybe it's fine for you and it won't drag.
