An extraordinary book

Not so much a crime thriller as a study in psychology. The frequently dark and storm lashed landscape of Lewis mirrors the brooding violence of the plot and the turmoil of the killer. The character of Finn MacLeod is compelling - I was on his side every minute, even when he was behaving despicably, and desperately wanted it all to work out, for him.

A book you think about long after the last page.

I loved this book.

I was really invested in the characters and the lives of a small close-knit community trying to ilk a living. The imagery and descriptions had me watching the actions like a movie.

A wonderful story

An enjoyable well constructed book which kept me guessing right to the end. Well written, great characters, very believable and well narrated. That's everything I look for in a book.

Engrossing

If you could sum up The Blackhouse in three words, what would they be?

Twist upon twist

Which character – as performed by Peter Forbes – was your favourite?

Finn was my favourite - he had such depth

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

there were so many - maybe the last moment the most

Not really the murder mystery I was expecting

The narrator was great, it was quite well written but not remotely a police procedural. The murder investigation was maybe a third of the book. The rest was reminiscences, related to the mystery but far too much in my opinion

Great introduction to The Islands...

Really enjoyed listening to this story unfold in the inimitable Peter May style. A good mystery story.
