Summary

*This audiobooks includes an audio-exclusive conversation between Peter May and Peter Forbes*

THE RETURN OF FIN MACLEOD, PETER MAY'S MUCH-LOVED HERO OF THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING LEWIS TRILOGY.

A MURDER

The body of eighteen-year-old TV personality Caitlin is found abandoned on a remote beach at the head of An Loch Dubh - the Black Loch - on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. A swimmer and canoeist, it is inconceivable that she could have drowned.

A SECRET

Fin Macleod left the island ten years earlier to escape its memories. When he learns that his married son Fionnlagh had been having a clandestine affair with the dead girl and is suspected of her murder, he and Marsaili return to try and clear his name.

A RECKONING

But nothing is as it seems, and the truth of the murder lies in a past that Fin would rather forget, and a tragedy at the cages of a salmon farm on East Loch Roag, where the tense climax of the story finds its resolution.

The Black Loch takes us on a journey through family ties, hidden relationships and unforgiving landscapes, where suspense, violent revenge and revelation converge in the shadow of the Black Loch.©2024 Peter May

Critic Reviews

A twisty, atmospheric read
This is a powerful exploration of human depravity and excessive family loyalty, set in glorious surroundings.
Laced with melancholy, this is May at his very best . . . Do not miss it, it is unforgettable. (Daily Mail)
The Black Loch combines all the elements which propelled May to literary stardom: a likeable but deeply flawed protagonist, a plot that is centred on an island for which May clearly has an abiding love, and a narrative that unwinds slowly but surely through the inevitable twists and red herrings.
Atmospheric, evocative, tense and compelling, this thought-provoking drama is another triumph from the master of moody crime.
The brilliantly atmospheric setting of this Hebridean mystery casts a powerful spell.
An atmospheric and beautifully written book. This may be a chilling and enthralling crime thriller, but Peter May's prose is exquisite, creating a sense of place brilliantly. The imagery surrounding the natural landscape is transformative, making the setting every bit as important as character or plot.

Love Peter's books, have them all and those on audio are superbly read by Peter who brings them all to life. Between the two Peter's it is like you are there with the characters on Lewis and Harris as if you are also part of the story. One of the characters had the same name as my dad and grandpa Although he was nothing like either of them. Lt kind of made it feel a bit more personal for me.

Loved revisiting the Lewis Trilogy and being taken back to the islands. .

This is a great story and it finalises the whole series. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the Island itself. A great writer and reader.

Loved every book in the Lewis series

Potential spoilers ahead: Peter May writes so well and I always feel completely immersed in his books. This one was tricky for me, though, because it involves a 30 year old teacher having sex with his 18 year old student. Although various characters in the book give this behaviour the disgust it deserves, there were also characters who justified it. ‘It’s real love. He truly loves her’, ‘She wanted him and she was always going to get him’ - justifications like that. (Those are not direct quotes but that’s the gist of it). I don’t know how to respond to that. I recognise that there will always be people who say things like that and Peter May is writing to create ‘real’ and believable people. But at the same time, I don’t like justifications like that being given any airtime. And the 30 year old teacher appeared to suffer no real legal consequences for his abuse of his student. So. Yes. I have it 4 stars for its excellent writing but not 5 stars because it’s problematic for me.

Excellent writing and narration

Great to see a return of Fin Maclean, and the continuing partnership of the author and narrator Peter Forbes. This time the salmon farming industry figures strongly in the plot. You might give up on eating farmed salmon after reading, and that's a good thing. Salmon aquaculture is a dreadful thing

Full of Hebridean atmosphere

So happy to hear another Peter May book! I love the characters and feel transported to the beautiful, brooding Hebrides . Exciting storyline with lots of pace Couldn’t put it down ( also found the information on salmon farming a revelation)
