Their steppe homeland bordered on a number of sedentary states to the south and there were, inevitably, numerous interactions between the nomads and their neighbours. The Scythians fought the Persians on a number of occasions, in one battle killing their king and on another occasion driving the invading army of Darius the Great from the steppe.

Publisher's Summary
Explore the captivating history of the Sumerians.
The sheer importance of Sumerian culture in regards to world culture as a whole is impossible to overstate. This civilization is single-handedly responsible for some of the most major innovations in nearly every field relevant to maintaining a civilized society - this includes religion, lawmaking, architecture, schooling, art, literature, and even entertainment.
Naturally, most of what we see as negative aspects of society were established in ancient Sumer as well. There wasn’t an aspect of Sumerian life that wasn’t plagued with corruption or devastation of one form or another. In other words, the Sumerians gave us both the sublimity of faith and the rigidness of religious thought coupled with a desire for political supremacy. They gave us both the benevolent, caring monarchs and cruel, punishing tyrants; the educated child and the spoiled brat; the hard-working agrarian and the drunken reveler; and the epic empires as well as the pathetic remnants of them. The Sumerians did it all, and they did it first.
Some of the topics and questions covered in this audiobook include:
- The ancient Sumerians in a nutshell
- The social structure of ancient Sumerians
- The religion and mythology of ancient Sumerians
- The Sumerian kingdoms chronology
- The everyday life of ancient Sumerians
- Sumerian innovations
- Sumerian culture
- Sumerian “foreign policy”: relations with other nations
- And a great deal more you don't want to miss out on!

There is so much information throw at you that a second listen is needed to absorb it all. Only complaint is the pronunciation of many words is so off as to be annoying.

Succinct and detailed

Not for beginners
To be blunt this book is not for beginners. It can present information in a manner hard to follow and with little context. That being said it is not bad per say and can be a useful in a supplementary sense for someone already familiar with early Sumerian history. I would recommend readers interested in ancient Sumer to read “Captivating History of Ur” before reading this book.

How history should NOT be taught
Incredibly boring and useless... A big part of the audio book consists of meaningless listings of the names of rulers, or of simple listings of events without any explanation of their background. I hoped to gain some substantial knowledge about the life and culture of ancient sumerians. Instead I was bored to tears. The whole thing is reminiscent of a very badly constructed history lesson at school where a lazy teacher just writes names and dates on the board and expects you to memorize them without any context. What a waste of time and money.

Good summary but weak connections and timeline.
The book presents fair amount of data, but with its short length, events, people and places are weakly connected. Each chapter shows different aspects of Sumerian civilization, but this organization difficults the understanding of the chronology.

Broad Review
I was mainly intrested in the mythology of Sumer and wanted to see what was in common with old testament stories. Though the chapter was very short it served its purpose well. This book admits there is so much data about Sumer it would be too exhaustive to go into great detail on any subject. I like the fact the author mentioned the problems sudo science and sudo history "scholars" bring by interpreting tablets that are fragmented and missing large pieces.

Great information, strange pronunciation
The information and presentation is great and very informative. The reader is easy to understand and presents very well but pronounced a lot of words strangely, not just the Sumerian ones which are forgivable but some relatively common English words as well.

There is nothing wrong with this book other than the fact that this is a bit short. They give a very brief overview of the subject which leaves me wanting more. So I would recommend getting a standard size book on the subject and start by reading that.

This book contains a wealth of information.
The author is perceptibly a very intelligent man who has particular experience in Sumerian archaeology, so his accounts are from his own knowledge and not just random research. His writing is somewhat academic, and while I (as a lay reader) have found the book interesting and understandable, it may turn some casual readers off.
