Publisher's Summary

"A practical mix of finance, philosophy and psychology. Dave is an Aussie FIRE pioneer." (Aussie Firebug)

What would life be like if you never had to work for money again?

That might sound like a fantasy. But gaining financial freedom is far more achievable than you think.

Dave Gow retired at 28, after a decade of working as a forklift driver. He didn’t win the lottery, inherit a fortune, or get lucky in the stock market. Instead, he discovered a simple set of principles that helped him spend less and invest more, all while increasing his happiness.

If you’re fed up with the rat race and wish you could live a life of freedom and fulfilment, his story will show you the path. In this book, you’ll learn:

  • The mindset that helped Dave build wealth and retire at 28
  • Proven tactics to optimise your spending for more savings and more enjoyment
  • How to easily build a portfolio of passive-income-producing investments
  • The secrets for living a happy and satisfying life while working towards your financial goals

From the author of the popular Strong Money Australia blog, this book is your complete roadmap to reaching financial independence and retiring early in Australia.

“Most people think financial independence isn’t possible on a normal salary, but this book shows exactly how it’s done.” (Pete Wargent, author of Get a Financial Grip)

“Dave’s story is an honest and inspiring reflection of what it takes to succeed financially. His book is a field guide for understanding the world of money, and yourself.” (Owen Raszkiewicz, founder of Rask)

fair bit of veganism

book has some good info in it, but a lot of fluff about living below your means, veganism, and green agendas.

I dont think becoming vegan is a reasonable way for people to save money...

Disappointing

It’s more of a “how to” budget, save and not spend money. Slow lane to financial independence.

Great advice with a great worldview

I think his financial advice was pretty good. Though I question how he recommends going all in on index funds. real estate can make lots of money, though you can't go wrong with the financial advice he gave.

I respect he has done so much research such as economics, the evils of consumerism, and the psychology of money and happiness, big respect, this takes a holistic perspective, this is absolutely necessary as we read this book for life, and life is about more than just money. Life is about happiness and finding meaning in different things. Many business and money books don’t talk about the psychology of happiness and money, and it is sad, as many people have a damaging mentality that they need it for their self-worth and to be valued by society. Also, most business books instill a raging desire for money that makes us feel miserable and too poor to be happy with what we have in life. He also speaks in mate-to-mate convo English so this book is accessible to anyone who needs this book.

Thank you mate.

excellent foundation for understanding investing

I was hooked and nocked this out in a week. I've re-listened to some chapters multiple times to really understand the concepts because they blew my mind. I feel much more informed for having read this book. A good balance of theory and philosophy of money.

Long winded and just plain commonsense

Took him 7 chapter to tell the reader, to be financially independent you just have to save money !!?
Plenty of other books which have better info and delivery.

Excellent and insightful

I’ve done a bit of light reading on FIRE but this is the first in-depth book I’ve read start to finish. I highly recommend it, especially to Aussies as Gowe is Australian and a fellow Perthinian like me. This book covers everything you need to know and more, five stars!

An excellent book on FIRE

I have listened to a few books on financial independence. I think Dave does a great job of putting forward the arguments for saving and investing money. Even my husband listened to it. And it is practical too.

Although I preferred "Quit Like A Millionaire" for the investment advice and she talked more about diversifying your investments, I liked that this book also covered it from an Australian perspective. And Dave also has more of a view to the environmental impact our decisions are having on the world - which was great.

Everyone will have their own flavour of FIRE, so I think all of these books add to the richness of the topic.
