About this listen

Vakov Fukasawa used to be a Reaper: a bio-enhanced soldier fighting for the Harmony, against a brutal invading empire. He's still fighting now, on a different battlefield: taking on stormtech. To make him a perfect soldier, Harmony injected him with the DNA of an extinct alien race, altering his body chemistry and leaving him permanently addicted to adrenaline and aggression. But although they meant to create soldiers, at the same time Harmony created a new drug market that has millions hopelessly addicted to their own body chemistry.

Vakov may have walked away from Harmony, but they still know where to find him, and his former Reaper colleagues are being murdered by someone, or something - and Vakov is appalled to learn his estranged brother is involved. Suddenly it's an investigation he can't turn down . . . but the closer he comes to the truth, the more addicted to stormtech he becomes.
And it's possible the war isn't over, after all . . .

STORMBLOOD is a whirlwind of an adventure, a journey across space and filled with bizarre aliens, cool tech, deliciously described weaponry. But most importantly, it's a love story between brothers, between friends, that took me to some emotional depths I was not expecting to go. It's also incredibly dark. The horrific nature of drugs, human exploitation, and cruelty is on display here, but never in an exploitative way. I would be lying if I said it didn't admit the darkness of it took me by surprise now and then.
I can't wait for the next one!

An excellent and very, very dark sci-fi adventure

I'm a sucker for a good space opera, and this book has it all: cool aliens, gloriously described spaceships, an asteroid mega city, and tons of worlds simmering beneath the surface. and of course the stormtech: alien DNA that literally gets people high on excitement. how can you resist something so insanely cool?

The main character is a broken mess of a man, and as his backstory and personality peels away, you root for him more and more on his quest as he goes through absolute hell to do right by the people he loves. can't wait for the next book.

An epic space opera that punches you in the heart

it was ok I guess.
too many prisoner scenes, oddly graphic torture too when nothing else in the book goes that far.
nothing about learning your lesson, more like do the same thing over and over and hope it's better the next time.
also a little hard to believe the relationship between the brothers. it was a bit of a mess.

can't recommend.

I like my space opera fast, gritty and dark. This book delivered in spades, having an addict protagonist racing along a giant asteroid as he tries to solve a murder, all the while mysterious aliens and long-dead civilisations are plotting and scheming in the background. Loved it!

A dark and gritty space opera

I’ve never read anything by this author, so I didn’t know what to expect. I was completely blown away by the sheer number of ideas on display. Weird aliens, terrifying use of wacky technology, and an asteroid city teeming with criminal underworlds and cultures. But Vakov Fukasawa is the highlight of this book, telling a story about a broken man who’s returned home from war and discovers his brother is killing his squadmates. He’s incredibly well characterised and the more I learned about his backstory the more I empathized with him. Can’t wait to see where the adventure goes next.

A gritty, furious space opera that pulls on the heartstrings

What a fantastic adventure this was! A heady mix of space-opera, cyberpunk and military SF, it pulls no punches and has a ton of heart. I especially loved the relationships between the main characters, and how they evolved and drew closer over the course of the story.

Fun, emotional, heart-pounding!

Story wasn't anything to write home about but the author was talented, the oboy thing I can critique are his fight scenes for some reason they bored me.

Was an interesting read

A gripping listen, set in a universe where humans are finding their place among diverse and technologically advanced alien species. Going to let my heart tale return to normal and then pick up book 2 , Recommended !

Quite a thriller !

Quite enjoyable sci-fi fare. Only downside was the uninterested sounding narrator. Awful pacing. Only real downside.

Quite good, despite the narrator.
