About this listen

Years ago, an overachieving and harried young mother accidentally flushed her gold watch down the toilet. Time passed, but the image of the lost watch continued to haunt her, a symbol of an overcommitted life. Two decades later, propelled by a series of curious coincidences, she leaves behind her busy professional life, her cell phone, and her family to escape the tyranny of time and walk 500 miles across Northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela.

Steps out of Time brings the mysterious and wonderful world of the Camino to life with its tales of serendipitous encounters, new friends made (and one tragically lost), stunning natural beauty, and unforgettable food. By the end of her journey, an exhausted and exhilarated Katharine Soper is keenly aware she has completed much more than a monthlong walk.

I’ve listened to this book while walking and preparing for my own Camino journey. It’s inspired me and also gave practical insights throughout. Loved it.

A tad too detailed in terms of recommended websites and a little monotonous through the middle. Otherwise an interesting story

I enjoyed the story, helped to imagine the Camino experience. I didn’t like the narration, but that’s probably just personal preference.

Good Camino story.

Katherine has largely captured my Camino experience, particularly on getting close to Santiago. It brought back all the emotion of walking those last kilometers toward the cathedral and the struggle to integrate ‘arrival’. I so realised that although Santiago was the destination it was a very small part of the Camino experience.

Great ‘read’. Thank you.

One of the best Camino books I have read

I loved this story and have listened to it over and over. The account of the author’s pilgrimage is straight from the heart. Simply written, she tells it how it was - her own observations and her self-discovery along the way. The narrator took a little longer to get used to (her accents were a little challenged at times) but I eventually came to enjoy her easy, relaxing style. Inspirational.

An authentic and heartwarming account
