About this listen

In her brand-new series Thrown Away Children, Louise Allen shares the harrowing stories she is exposed to as a foster mother. The first in the series, Stella's Story, tells the astonishing true story of a young girl scarred by an abusive past.

Named after the lager that christened her at birth, Stella's life is characterised instability and neglect. Her teenage mother abandons her in the first few weeks of her life, and left in the 'care' of her father, she ends up lying deserted in a house with no food, no water, no clothes and no warmth.

She eventually lands in the care of foster carer Louise, who is determined to change her life for the better. Things seem to be going well - but when Stella has a startling response to having her photo taken, it becomes clear the scars of her abuse run deeper than anyone could have ever guessed.

The only drawback of this book is the heart-wrenching injustice it portrays-the suffering endured by the beautiful Stella and, by extension, all those who have experienced or may yet experience such unspeakable trauma at the hands of those meant to protect them.
I feel as though my own heart has, in its way, been healed by your beautiful narration, Melanie-like the grandmother I never had. And to Louise, your palpable consideration shines through both your writing and the little ones fortunate enough to fall into your care.
Art is so therapeutic; I remember having a major accident while studying art at university, and returning to create something healing was a catharsis like no other.

Louise and Melanie may have accidentally healed my inner child

Louise, you are but just a brilliant author, but an incredible human. Thank you for opening our eyes to the trauma experienced by many children, and the invaluable gift of loving, determined foster carers .

An incredible story fills and hurts my heart

Helps you understand what some children have experienced and how they were helped and how it shaped there adult lives.

Well written

Direct and beautifully told of a sad and horrifying subject .
Good conquers evil . There is love in the world

So sympathetic to a lost child

What a tragically sad story. There are people in this world that should be locked up & the key thrown away. Either that or bring back capital punishment!! I just hope Stella manages to put the trauma behind her. Hypnotherapy might help her forget. Louise is doing a mighty job looking after children like Stella.

Just So Sad.
