Publisher's Summary

The starship Freedom is just a museum ship...until the aliens attack.

The starship Freedom was once a mighty warship. Today, she's a tourist attraction. The space wars ended long ago. The Freedom is now a flying museum; the tourists love it. The Changing of the Guard, the starfighter aerobatics, the starboard cannon salute...it's the best show in the galaxy.

James King commands the starship Freedom. He hates his job. He was a real soldier once, back when the Freedom was a real warship. He never imagined himself running a tourist trap. Right after Christmas, he plans to retire. Then, on Christmas day, the aliens attack. Horrifying aliens. Creatures of claws, fangs, and endless malice. Within hours, they devastate Earth's military. Millions die. So much for retirement.

The aliens spare the starship Freedom. After all, she's only a tourist attraction. But not to Commander King. He will get his beloved starship battle-ready. He will enter the fight. The Freedom will fly to war again!

Battlestar Galactica meets Starship Troopers in this sci-fi adventure from Daniel Arenson, the USA Today best-selling author of Earthrise.

BSG

Hmmmm I enjoyed it as a good yarn. My concern is most of the characters are effectively transposed from BSG.

King - Adama down to his gravely voice,in a flying museum and even his old star fighter
The princess - Roslyn
Spitfire - Starbuck
Kings son - Apollo right down to being estranged from his father.

Story follows the first episode closely. Space station destroyed by enemy with only two aboard. Rush to rearm from a remote supply base.

Overall it's an enjoyable listen whilst driving. I'll be buying the next book.

Has potential but too jingoistic

The author has a great story to tell in true space opera fashion. Unfortunately the language is too jingoistic, bordering on propaganda style. The dialogue is a little awkward and overly sentimental. The author seems unfamiliar with military language usage and how orders are given. Also, using terms such as “hypersonic” to describe velocity of vehicles travelling in space doesn’t really work well as it is a concept that only occurs in an atmosphere.

On the plus side the story has a good level of suspense and the character development is handled well. There is a good range of interesting characters as well. Some may criticise the initial slide development of the plot but I found this entirely appropriate given the the number of individual character story lines intertwined to give us good understanding of the whole story.
Ultimately, it is a good character driven space opera story but I’d let down by the aforementioned overly used jingoistic language.

Narrator: the narrator has a deep pleasant voice entirely appropriate for this kind of story. He does a reasonable job in voicing so many different characters and accents though his vocal range is somewhat limited when it comes to female voices.

Best for young teenagers

Character building is solid, but don't reflect on the story. It takes itself too seriously to be the comedy that it is.

Brilliant

If you’re a fan of the movie Battleship then you’ll love this book. Narration was perfect and who doesn’t love a giant bug hunt.

Can’t wait to hear the next episode.

Starts off a little slow but certainly picks up quickly. Gives a great insight to the characters their personalities and relationships.
