Each chapter alternates the current year. One is what I'd refer to as "present day" with our crew on the Enterprise. The other is set when Una Chin-Riley is studying at the Academy and first meets Pike. As you progress through chapters, jumping forwards and backwards in time, you start to piece together the story. It's a unique approach for a book, but it's done well.

I listened to "The High Country" before this and enjoyed that one more, but this has its place and is still worth a listen.

This was a very dry and drawn out novel. I didn't mind so much the back story's of the main characters however it just went on and on and on. Little action but if you enjoy a story about prejudice and racism this is for you.
