Story
Charlie thought building a spaceship had been tough, so being king should be a piece of cake. Unfortunately, it was like a cake made of cement. Hard to swallow, and just might kill him. It was good being king, or so Charlie had believed. After an abrupt crash arrival, people had finally stopped trying to kill him - for the most part, anyway - and his new subjects respected him. Or feared him. It was sort of hard to tell, what, with the ginormous dragon who had eaten the previous king standing right behind him.

Story
It was looking like Lady Luck had quite a grudge against him. In fact, at this point merely crashing the multi-billion-dollar ship he had helped design would have felt like winning the lottery compared to his current dilemma. If only he were so lucky. Things had started off all right - that is, until a freak wormhole unexpectedly swallowed his ship, leaving him stranded on an unknown planet far, far from home.

Like poop on your shoe, bad luck had a knack for sticking Charlie wherever he went. And it sure did stink. Wormholes to a distant galaxy? Done it. Alien slavery? Yup. Forced gladiatorial combat? That too. Space pirate and eventual rebel leader? Check. Rising to the pinnacle of power as Dragon King? Uh-huh. Charlie, it seemed, had seen and survived it all, and at long last it looked like he’d finally earned himself a little peace and quiet. That is until a whole new threat reared its ugly head.

Could a magic wielding astronaut fight off an alien invasion with just his vampire assassin and space dragon friends? Amazingly, Charlie thought they might actually pull it off... that is if Lady Luck decided to play nice for a change. Unfortunately, knowing his fortunes, the odds of that were slim to none. The aliens were coming, that much was certain. What they could do to stop them, however, remained up in the air. Having joined forces with the mighty AIs overseeing the planet and its defenses, at least their toys had been upgraded accordingly.

When your luck just plain sucks in not one galaxy, but two, most people would throw in the towel. But not Charlie. In fact, it almost seemed like he was a glutton for that sort of misery. His friends were spread across two distant galaxies, separated by a heavily guarded magical portal and struggling to deal with a war now spilling over into both the technological realm as well as the magical one. And it was beginning to look like they’d reached their breaking point. But Charlie wasn’t about to give up, nor would he give in.

With powerful forces working behind the scenes, Daisy seemed to be on the path to what may very well be a rousing victory. Or a glorious death, should she fail. For obvious reasons, she hoped for the former rather than the latter. She and her friends had persevered and come out on the other side time and again. Now they just had to pull together one last time to stand against their greatest foe. Success would mean victory. Failure would mean the loss of all they held dear.

Publisher's Summary
Charlie was living the life of luxury as an alien wizard’s gladiator slave. It was not ideal.
He had survived a spaceship crash, alien slave traders, space pirates, and fierce gladiatorial combat. Hell, he’d even faced an actual fire-breathing dragon and lived, but now, he was presented with an even greater challenge. Domestic living, captive on a strange world.
Charlie almost had to laugh at his changing circumstances, having seen it all since a wormhole spat him out in a distant galaxy. He learned to fight, he learned to use magic, he even learned to kill - to survive at all costs. And that hard work had somehow landed him a cushy life on a powerful wizard’s estate. But all was not what it seemed.
Something was wrong, and he still wasn’t a free man. Captivity, even in a gilded cage such as this, was abhorrent to the spaceman from Earth. And while the new existence he had fallen into seemed one of luxury, he couldn’t help but wonder when it would all go to hell.
He should have known, with his luck, the answer was soon.

An excellent sequel
**received promotional copy from author
This book continues where Bad Luck Charlie leaves off. A lot has happened and the author does a great job easing you back into the world without rehashing everything. It’s definitely a good idea to refresh your memory of book 1 before jumping back in, but it feels great when you read this directly after 1.
The book doesn’t feel as action-packed as the first did, but that’s ok. It’s kind of like the Empire Strikes Back in that it’s more about the development of Charlie than a huge action epic. This really works. There are predictable moments but they are few and far between. I saw the ending “twist” coming the moment the author set it up, but that didn’t stop me from getting excited about book 3!
If you read my review of book one, my main complaints were language and the const use of “tech.” I’m pleased to say that it was much better. “Tech” sounded better because most characters began calling it “tech magic.” It just felt less forced. The language wasn’t as prolific either.
Another fun listen! Don’t pass it up if you listened to the first!

Great continuation to a great story
The title of this one feels like it would have been more appropriate as the header for the second arc of the first book as honestly there is very little pirate related stuff in it and it's really just a mention of his past and some re-connections. I get it though this would have been hard to title. While this book still has plenty of action the majority of it isn't nearly as fast paced or seat of your pants as the first one but it still largely feels like a combination of Farscape and Forest Gump. We get a little bit of slice of life and mystery in this one followed by some seat of the pants and finally a resolution. I personally feel the first book as better but for the average reader this one may have been easier to keep up with. The narration is once again fantastic as well and the overall story advances in an interesting way. Definitely a good continuation.

Charlie gets introduced to what real power is
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
TLDR; As good as the first, and still highly recommended.
Another easy recommendation if you enjoy Sci-Fi, it's a sequel so you'll need to read/listen to the first one, and you won't be disappointed if you do. Charlie gets entangled with some of the real magic users of this Universe and gets involved in a conspiracy that could disrupt the balance of powers and stability of the universe. On top of that, he makes friends with a Dragon, meets up with some of his old friends, and invents coffee... Yes, invents coffee, and the author made that enjoyable.

Enjoyable series
This is the type of SF books I used to read in the 80s, Not overly taxing but enjoyable and light.
I would say they a would be better aimed at the young adult market.
I liked the narrator and the books get better through the series.
One negative is that the scenes can jump around a little, and feel that they have been edited down from larger text, e.g. some fights start and instantly end as if a dozen paragraphs have been cut out to shorten the book.

Entertaining sequel
I received a free audiobook from the Author, in exchange for an unbiased review. I may have mis-spelled some character names...
Space Pirate Charlie picks up directly where Bad Luck Charlie left off, with Charlie a slave of the Visla Makton, a powerful mage. Although Charlie seems to have fallen on his feet, and is treated as special because of his previous exploits with the Zamaki (dragon) it soon becomes apparent that all is not well, and Charlie must team up with friends old and new to defeat the Visla.
What follows is an adventure through several colourful alien worlds as Charlie tries to escape the Visla and find some of his human tech to help in the battle.
If you're here looking for highbrow literature you're in the wrong place (I'm sure the author won't mind me saying). If you're here for a lighthearted, fun and dramatic adventure featuring magic and tech then buckle up and hold on tight to the dragon, it's quite the ride.
Also I won't spoil it for anyone but that's a heck of a set-up for book 3 at the end!
