Publisher's Summary

A woman is caught in a gripping moral dilemma that resonates far beyond her place in time and history in number one New York Times best seller Jodi Picoult's latest.

'I don't want that nurse touching my baby.' Those are the instructions from the newborn child's parents. However, when the baby goes into cardiac arrest, Ruth, a nurse of 20 years' experience, sees no option but to assist. But the baby dies. And Ruth is charged with negligent homicide.

Ruth is shattered and bewildered as she tries to come to terms with her situation. She finds different kinds of support from her sister, a fiery radical, and her teenage son, but it is to Kennedy McQuarrie, a white middle-class lawyer, to whom she entrusts her case - and her future.

As the two come to develop a truer understanding of each other's lives, they begin to doubt the beliefs they each hold most dear. For the privileged to prosper, they come to realise, others have to suffer. Racism takes many forms and is reinforced by the structures of our society.

In gripping dramas like Nineteen Minutes, My Sister's Keeper and The Pact, Jodi Picoult has explored the big issues of our time through characters whose lives resonate with us. Here we see once again her unrivalled ability to immerse us in a story whose issues will linger with us long after the story has finished.

A Wakeup Call

This was an important story well told. As an open minded person who was raised to love and respect everyone iI was surprised by my reaction to this book. We can have underlying prejudices due to ignorance of the truth. I happy to say this book made me rethink some ideas I had about what it is like to be the subject of prejudice. I know nothing but I am willing to learn.

Brilliant.

This is without doubt the best book I have listened to on Audible. The characters are powerful and believable and the story line thought provoking and intriguing. The sort of book schools should have their students read.

Loved it

I loved this book, it got me thinking about my personal views in depth & how I want to raise my children. The narrators were great in capturing the charters. It would be great for this book to be brought into high schools.

Excellent and thought provoking!!

I thought this was extremely well written and the audio pieces in each person made it all the more realistic. it was like watching a movie in my mind.
As a young white female I have been made aware to so many things I had never thought of before and it has just provoked such emotions in me that I just want to tell everyone to read this book.

Great performance of a wonderful story

Loved this book and the performances of the narrators. Especially loved the heart wrenching story for the truths it revealed relevant to my life today. The book contained important discussions around race and racism particularly meaningful in the current climate! Well done Jodi Picoult

YES!!!

Thank you. Thank you for opening my eyes. Thank you for teaching me what racism really is. Thank you for showing me just how racist I am when I truly believed I wasn't. Thank you.

AMAZING powerful emotional

This book will stay with me for a long time. A whole new image of the world we live in, so conflicting and thought provoking. An amazing read, so cleverly written, you see all the different perspectives and so eye opening.
The different narrators made a lot of difference as it was easy to understand who was talking.
A brilliant book.
