This murder-mystery series spinoff has a more subdued, depressing feel than the original Valor & Doyle series. Tallus is frustrated and bored by his job, while Diem is an angry, self-loathing guy (thanks to his father) who struggles to make ends meet. We’re gradually watching Diem thaw towards Tallus but it’s a very slow process. Because the guys are working off the books, there’s a feeling of seedy illegitimacy to their investigative work, which evokes the golden age of PI novels. I do like the crossover with the main Valor & Doyle characters and I really hope that continues. This has the potential to be a favourite series but only if the mood improves. 🎧 Nick J Russo is always a good performer and I love him for Tallus, but I think his voice register struggles to sit comfortably with Diem’s deeper bass rumble.
Evokes the golden age of seedy private eyes!
