On a balmy September evening, Tallus and Diem discover a man who has been attacked in an alley. Saving his life seems like the right thing to do. With his dying breath, the man thrusts an item upon the couple and makes one request. Get rid of it.

The mysterious object proves to be valuable, and Tallus doesn’t want to part with it. Keeping it makes Diem uncomfortable in a way he can’t explain. Tempers flare, but before they can come to an agreement, everything unravels.

The item is more dangerous than either of them realized.

Lies and secrets threaten to tear the couple apart as Diem is drawn into something dark and menacing. Keeping his hotheaded boyfriend safe proves to be almost impossible, but Diem’s been given a task, and he will not fail. If he does, he will lose everything.

Toronto police records clerk Tallus Domingo is still impulsive and histrionic but his partner, PI Diem Krause loves him all the same. Tallus is developing into a promising trainee PI, if only he’d do the required study. When the pair discover a dying man in an alley who asks Diem to get rid of an expensively bejeweled playing card, they unwittingly become entangled with the vicious gang responsible and are totally unprepared for the ruthless and bloodthirsty actions that follow.

Phew, what an intense ride! There are some mildly uncomfortable torture scenes here so check the trigger warnings on the author’s website if you need to. I enjoyed this a lot, it was far more suspenseful than previous books in the series. The case involved some psychopathic people and they were believably scary men! Diem and Tallus also make further progress on their relationship, even if it is the old ‘two steps forward, one step back’ shuffle at times. Diem’s self-protective walls are crumbling in fits and starts and maybe there’s hope he can shake some of his addictions. It’s a great series with two strong main characters and I can’t wait for more! 🎧 Nick J Russo does an excellent job on the audio narration and he also provides incidental music that fits the series to a tee.
