Carter Morgan III hates everything about South Carolina University except for one thing: hockey.

As the starting netminder for the team, he lives for those moments when he can step onto the ice and between the pipes. Unfortunately, his time at school and on the team is slowly coming to an end. Although he'd love nothing more than to pursue a career in the NHL, he knows better than to get his hopes up.

Zeke Cassidy needs a place to live. When he answers an advertisement for a roommate, he's not sure what he is expecting except that it isn't Carter Morgan III. Carter is unfriendly and aloof, and they have nothing in common. Even so, the pair hit it off immediately and become friends.

Carter knows Zeke isn't interested in being anything beyond friends and roommates. Unfortunately, knowing this doesn't stop him from hoping for more, no matter how much he tries to convince himself it's impossible.

College student Zeke Cassidy is struggling financially but he’s eager to move closer to campus. When he answers a roommate ad, he’s puzzled by hockey player Carter Morgan III, who seems resentful and remote even while offering Zeke the room rent-free. Zeke soon finds that Carter has few friends, only does unfulfilling one-night stands, and perpetually expects to be let down by others and he makes it his task to show him friendship. Things get complicated when Carter starts to develop feelings for Zeke, who is demisexual and takes a long time to develop any romantic or sexual relationship.

This college / sports romance absolutely hit the spot just right for me. Carter was like a wounded puppy that basked in Zeke’s care and attention. This is a thoroughly feel-good romance and, while there were a few speed bumps, the level of angst was quite low. I usually find that less interesting or too sugary, but this totally grabbed my attention and my heart, without being smaltzy at all! JJ Mulder is a new author to me and I’m excited to explore more!! 🎧 Of course, Iggy Toma (as Zeke) and Liam DiCosimo (as Carter) channeled the characters with their usual excellence, perfect choices for the audio!

Enjoyed this a lot but the performance on the part of Carter was throwing me off a lot of the time. No real issues just not for me I guess.

These narrators always make it an easy listen. There wasn’t much plot & no real drama, it was more relationship focused, but not very spicy.
They were a cute couple. It did end in a HFN with no epilogue, so I assume you hear more about them in the series. I will get to the next book at some point but I’m in no rush.

Fluffy, pink fairy floss. Lots of overly thought out, emotional repression. It's a slow burn that barely makes it to a simmer. If very nice boys being endlessly school girl anxty, is your thing ? This is the double vanilla, glacier of romance. So slow, so predictable.

This was a lovely romantic story between Carter and Zeek. I loved their honesty and vulnerability to each other. I found the narrator's voice for Zeek was somewhat annoying.

I listened to this book when it was free, and even though Max's story sounds interesting, I'm not convinced enough to pay for the rest of this series.
