Publisher's Summary

The first book in the heartwarming Gibson series by beloved saga author Anna Jacobs.

In 1820, Salem Street is sparkling and new: eight small terraced houses built by a Lancashire mill owner for his best workers. Annie Gibson's family is one of the first to move in - a step up in the world for them. But when her mother dies, Annie's happy childhood ends and she is left to bring up her brother and sister.

Red-haired, intelligent and startlingly pretty, Annie soon finds herself banished from home by a jealous stepmother. She finds work in the local doctor's household, where she learns about the fascinating world outside Salem Street. And when her adored childhood friend Matt asks her to marry him, Annie thinks her dreams are coming true.

But suddenly everything turns upside-down. Abandoned and pregnant, Annie returns to Salem Street, where an unexpected offer gives her independence. One day, she vows, she will move into the wider world again. One day....

Excellent from the start to finish

Loved this book and the characters were very credible. The pace and narration were excellent and I didn't put it down until i'd finished it. It tells of the hardship of the early 1800's and one woman's strength of character. Only one complaint, as I didn't want it to end, when it did. I found it quite unsatisfactory and had hoped for a better conclusion. Will definitely be reading book two.

Absolutely Brilliant !!!!

An excellent read. Fabulous story and expertly read by Anne Dover. The best book I’ve listened to in ages. Can’t wait to listen to the next book in the series. I would highly recommend this book.

Wonderful family saga

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the first in a series about the Gibson family, focusing mainly on the eldest daughter, Annie. There are many ups and downs in Annie's life, but she was able to overcome them with tenacity and determination, along with help from her family and the friends she acquired along the way.
I plan to listen to the rest of the series, and am hoping they are all narrated by the wonderful Anne Dover.

Riverting

Absolutely riverting, one gets totally submerged in the story. It gave an insight into life in the 1800’s. Poor in those days meant a devastating life but sometimes life had a way of upsetting the apple cart as with as with Annie but she showed true grit and determination to rise above her humble beginnings.

Courageous

This book is brilliant , from beginning to end. This is a book about a brutal rape and the consequences. I have no doubt that this happens today but this is more about how this young girl coped with it and carves a life from this incident and first allow it to define her. The love of her heroine shines though the book. More please.
