About this listen

There's no formal training for battlefield salvage. You just have to pick things up as you go along. Swords, armour, arrows - and the bodies, of course.

Over the years, Saevus Corax has picked up a lot of things. Some of them have made him decent money, others have brought nothing but trouble. But it's a living, and somebody has to deal with the dead.

Something else that Saevus has buried is his past. Unfortunately, he didn't quite succeed.

The first novel in an epic fantasy trilogy from World Fantasy Award-winner K. J. Parker.

I love a good anti-hero, and K. J. Parker really delivers. The subtleties and black humour throughout this trilogy are great fun, and the characters are larger than life. The depth of his characters, the frequent anecdotal asides, all provide a rich detailed universe of endless possibilities and pit falls. I have already listened to these books multiple times and will continue to do so as they reward me every time.

Ben Onwukwe's narration is brilliant and brings to life the characterisation of this rogues gallery.

If you are tired of the same old fantasy humdrum then you need to try these stories, they are fresh and innovative, and really entertaining.

I eagerly await further novels from K J Parker. Thank you.

Far smarter, darker and wittier than your average fantasy. No reliance on fantasy tropes, just well written characters. Side note: It turns out KJ Parker is Tim Holt? Explains a lot.

Tim Holt? Amazing.

I really enjoyed 16 ways to defend a walled city, This is very similar in the sense that we have a kind of self-deprecating anti-hero – who really is a sympathetic character. The rich smoky timbre of Ben Onwukwe voice hovers somewhere on the edge of wanting him to clear his throat and being deeply, stress deeply, satisfying. If you like K J Parker, this is very on brand and rich in detail, contributing to his growing Robur world building.

rich voice, rich character
