Story
Dear Listener, I know what you're thinking, is it some kind of macabre joke? How can Ruby Wax write a book about good news when the world is facing the worst disaster since the Plague? Let me explain. I began writing in 2018, back when the world's worries were somewhat different. Climate change, greedy bankers, exam results, crap politicians, mental health: these are still huge issues, but even the ancient soothsayers reading pig entrails couldn't have predicted this. This is my new mission: to share the green shoots of hope peeping through the soil of civilisation.

Filled with witty anecdotes from Ruby's own life, and backed up by smart science and practical mindfulness exercises, How to be Human is the only manual you need to help you upgrade your mind as much as you've upgraded your iPhone.

Story
Ruby Wax - comedian, writer and mental health campaigner - shows us how our minds can jeopardize our sanity. With her own periods of depression and now a Masters from Oxford in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy to draw from, she explains how our busy, chattering, self-critical thoughts drive us to anxiety and stress. If we are to break the cycle, we need to understand how our brains work, rewire our thinking and find calm in a frenetic world.

Story
In December 2017 the famous porn star August Ames committed suicide in a park in the Conejo Valley. It happened a day after she’d been the victim of a pile-on, via Twitter, by fellow porn professionals - punishment for her tweeting something deemed homophobic. A month later, August’s husband, Kevin, connected with Jon Ronson to tell the story of how Twitter bullying killed his wife. What neither Kevin nor Ronson realized was that Ronson would soon hear rumors and secrets hinting at a very different story - something mysterious and unexpected and terrible.

Story
When Jo Brand hosted Have I Got News For You late last year, her calm explanation of the effects of sexism on women to a bemused all-male cast turned into a viral phenomenon. There has been a whole tradition of books over hundreds of years where a father shares his wisdom with his son - started by Lord Chesterfield in the 18th century - while women have been silent (aka bullied into thinking their advice wasn't worth writing down). This book puts a stop to all that.

Publisher's Summary
Could we be happier? Calmer? Better human beings?
In this Audible Original, Ruby Wax hunts down her heroes - brain scientists - in the UK and across America, to learn more about what makes us tick: why we get stressed, how we feel pain, what makes us addicted - and has a lot of fun along the way.
She faces death with Past Mortems author Carla Valentine, explores how video games affect our attention with gamification expert Gabe Zichermann, and discovers the benefits of vaginal smearing with Professor Tim Spector. Natural Born Learners author Alex Beard reveals what teenagers really need to know for a good education and visitors to a New York soup kitchen help Ruby confront her fear of compassion.
In No-Brainer Ruby draws on memories of her own difficult childhood and long history of depression and makes you laugh out loud with her frank observations and anarchic questions. You’ll learn a lot about your brain, and hear a ton of advice on how to use it better.

Ruby gets in the way
This conveys great information in an interview format but there were times I wanted to scream, “Ruby...TOO MUCH INFORMATION!!!” Her self-disclosures were often helpful but a few were painful to hear (her mother placing her daughter’s hand on a hot burner to teach her not to touch a hot stove - what psychosis is this?}. Others were inappropriate; joking about smearing her babies with her own vaginal fluid because they were born by c-section and thus, did not have the antibodies that come with a vaginal birth. I could have lived without that. Other insights were good; a high point was an interview with a woman who lives with constant pain from a spinal cord injury serenely and without drugs, using mindfulness and meditation. Amazing. But Ruby got in the way too often.

Educational and Witty
I stumbled upon Ruby while looking for my next Audible audiobook. I’m thrilled that I found this book. I have listened to it while doing my daily 3 mile walk and learned some strategies I can use to live with my 21 year old who has a history of Depression and the latest diagnosis being Bipolar.
I especially loved how honest Ruby was. In the last chapter, for example, she was very upset with her test results regarding aging and openly told the doctor she was very disappointed with the results. It takes balls to share that way with an audience. (I think Ruby would say it that way).
Personally, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer (non-smoker) that metastasized to various other parts of my body, especially my brain. For folks with a diagnosis that is less than wonderful, I recommend Ruby’s approach to mindfulness. I have outlived my prognosis for almost a year and plan to continue what has worked so far, which includes a GIANT dose of mindfulness.
I’m looking forward to my next Ruby Wax audiobook.

Love It
Funny take on the hard topic of depression and how to deal with it.
Listening to Ruby's voice in this audiobook gave me so much more than reading it in a paper book.
Happy to recommend it to anyone who like to learn about depression, the brain and how to handle it/yourself.
Thanks Ruby! /V

Announcement: the ending in a new voice
The book is fun and just enough useful starter content is heard in each chapter. Then, "A novice hopes you' ve enjoyed this program. " is heard in a new, living person's voice. This is what I've been waiting for for so long.

Broad Generalizations Abound
This is a narration around parts of podcasts. I tolerated the author talking over guests, bad jokes, use of the word fireman twice in the first few chapters, and the overgeneralizations resulting from "people are like this" rather than using adjectives such as most, some, etc. The final straw for me was when one of Ruby's experts said that we now know that troubled children come from troubled parents. That kind of statement is so unfair to the parents of children who have mental health issues or trauma. This book boldly perpetuates this nonsense. Since I could not trust the information to be accurate, the book was returned.

My audible mind.
I found this quite interesting but I viewed it from a distance as I am 86 which definitely made it a strange experience. .I do think that its no good fearing old age. Poor Ruby, just accept it and make the best of it. It's quite a big challenge.

Poor formatting - couldn't finish 😯
I love Ruby and have been constantly listening to her 3 previous books for the last couple of months. However, my excitement about continuing the journey with this one was short-lived and I'm looking to see if I can return it. It's done as a series of interviews, perhaps carried out in a pub toilet, as the sound engineering leaves me struggling to listen to it. I had to stop after the first chapter when I realised the next one followed the same format.
A good book I suspect, but not one I'll be listening to. Sorry 😒

Quite interesting Deal of the Day listen.
Some quite interesting information here, if you can put aside Ruby Wax's annoying ego and butting in all the time. She really would do better not being in 'performance' mode, trying to make funny interjections and just generally being more and more annoying. She does however introduce the listener to various 'experts' and researchers in the fields of mindfulness and brain neuroscience, and so can direct you to further research and studies and authors. I will be going to these rather than reading or listening to any more of Wax's books.

You won’t regret it.
If you have any interest in how the brain works, how we function as people or in the pros and cons of the modern world on our mental states, you will not regret listening to this book. Ruby Wax strikes a perfect balance between scientific information and wit, I will definitely be listening to it again.

It's not a book!
I'm relatively new to Audible so maybe this is a non issue to most... my main gripe though with this 'book'is that it isn't a book!
It is a documentary or a podcast. It is a collection of interviews with experts in the area of mindfulness, anxiety, depression etc.
I love Ruby Wax and her knowledge on the subject and her ability to get the issues across was brilliant.... so I listened to the end and enjoyed it for what it was. I just felt a bit cheated!
