About this listen

When renowned archeologist Gav Gendin discovers the wreck of an Ancient starship, with a stasis pod and a still living member of the extinct aliens inside, it should be the greatest triumph of his career. Instead, it ends in disaster and leads to his son, Siv, being placed in cryogenic sleep.

A century later, Siv Gendin wakes to a world in decline, a world where you do what you must to survive. With the help of a snarky, sentient AI companion named Silky, Siv becomes a top procurement specialist.

Enslaved to the Shadowslip Guild, Siv has little hope of ever being his own man. Until they offer him freedom in exchange for completing a practically suicidal mission. His target: a young girl with uncanny abilities. Rival criminal guilds, foreign governments, and religious extremists will risk all-out war to get their hands on her - for good reason.

With her mysterious link to the Ancients, this girl could reshape human civilization, perhaps even bring back the golden age Siv knew as a child. But only if he is willing to defy the Shadowslip and risk everything to keep her safe.

The Benevolency Universe

For over 3,000 years a superintelligence called the Benevolence guided humanity through an age of unprecedented peace, prosperity, and technological advancement. Now, a century after its collapse, our enemies multiply as we struggle to maintain our starfaring civilization and recover technology we once took for granted. But the Benevolence kept many secrets to itself, secrets that could shape the future of humanity.

Story is ok. Targeted at a younger audience I think. Narrator did a good job.

It's ok

The only book I've ever listened to that comes close to Iain M Banks in terms of world building and story threads. 10/0

Action-packed ride with plenty of detail

The narration is unbelievably fast. But setting play speed to 0.85x makes it feel normal. Great story.

Very good story telling, entertaining, interesting concepts.
Kept me wanting to read on.
Will definitely continue with reading the whole series.

Great space opera

The first chapter is frankly quite dull, but the rest of the book is very good. Non-stop action and drama, quirky characters, an unusual setting and fun story really make this a page-turner.
The reader has an unusual manner and stresses the final word in sentences when narrating. It took me a bit of getting used to but his accents and voices are excellent and the characters really come to life.

Great story.

I enjoyed this book. It was well read, with a great effort put into separating the characters voices. It's a story set in a soft sci-fi type universe, warp drives, shields and artificial gravity etc, but it defines them well in story.

Probably aimed at mid to late teen audiences (judging by the tame language), but, works for any fan of sci-fi as far as I'm concerned

Well voiced, a fun ride

I find setting the reading speed to 0.8 , makes for a much better listening experience.

Issue with performance

the story was ok,would make a good funny read but I couldn't listen to that narrator, very rushed, difficult to determine what character and lacking expression.

unfortunate
