Story
My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

Publisher's Summary
Three 20-somethings are all that stands between an otherworldly threat and the survival of Earth in the latest thrill ride by Dennis E. Taylor, author of the Audible and New York Times best-selling Bobiverse series.
Jack Kernigan is having a bad day...a bad year...a bad life. After being booted out of MIT, he’s back in his Ohio hometown, working for the family business, facing a life of mediocrity. Then one day, out on a delivery, his truck hits...something. Something big...something furry...something invisible. And, it turns out, something not of this Earth.
Fate can play funny tricks. Which is why Jack suddenly finds himself the planet’s best hope to unravel a conspiracy of galactic proportions that could spell the end of the human race. All Jack and his best friends, Natalie and Patrick, have to defeat an alien threat is their wits, a lot of coffee, and a rather snippy AI named Sheldon. Plus, their own spaceship.
After all, if you’re going to rescue the world, the least you can get out of it is your own spaceship.

Very entertaining and not too long.
I just finished this very entertaining book and it wasn’t that long, which was nice, in a good way. The narration is exactly what you’d expect from Porter and the story and comedy is what you’d expect from Taylor’s writing. It doesn’t have as much depth as any of the Bobiverse books but I don’t believe it was meant to. Perfect for a road trip. Wondering if he listens to a lot of Jimmy Dore though…

The least helpful review of Roadkill
Uh… yeah… well, I didn’t not like it. It was entertaining. However, I expected more from Mr. Taylor. He’s in my top five favorite authors list. My “pause whatever else you’re doing and listen to his new book” list.
So, what went wrong?
This was a little too tongue-in-cheek for me. Too rushed. Too influenced by Craig Alanson. The characters acted in unusual ways. Most of the time authors do this to force the plot along, but in this case it was different in a way I can’t quite describe. Example: “Oh, I’m the first human ever to make extraterrestrial contact? Wow. Cool. Well, it’s my bedtime. See you tomorrow.” WTF! No one acts like this! I kept thinking that this was a great story concept, but slow down! Explore the nuances. Hash out the details. This audiobook could have been half again as long and it would have been for the better.
Seriously, Dennis E. Taylor is one of my favorite authors. If you’re unfamiliar with him, don’t start here! Go listen to the Bobiverse series. Do this now! I mean, right now!
So, what went right?
Two words: Ray Porter.
That’s all I got.

Don't skip this one!
As an avid Dennis E Taylor fan, I had this one on pre-order. I was not disappointed. It is another quirky sci-fi adventure narrated by the absolute best narrator on Audible, Ray Porter. It has the same tenor as his other novels, but they are also voiced by Ray Porter so it is easy to imagine the stories are similar, but this is a stand alone adventure which doesn't borrow any themes from his previous novels. If you are a fan of Dennis E Taylor or just want a fun sci-fi jaunt across the solar system, don't skip this one!

Another hit from Taylor!
Big Dennis E. Taylor fan and have been for a while. I've been eagerly awaiting continuations of any of the 3 main series hes started but discovered he was working on a standalone novel and was a little disappointed. Now having listened to it my disappointment was misplaced. This books got the signature Taylor vibe to it, goofy but serious, funny, entertaining, lovable characters and is a fun light hearted story. The fact that Ray Porter narrates yet again just makes things alllll the better. I'm actually glad he didnt try and drag this one out into a series format because i feel it would've been reaching to try and get more miles out of it then it was rated for but i think he hit the mark just perfect the way he did it. It's kind of a first contact story in a way with elements from alot of different storys and nods to different tv shows and such, nowdays its hard to make a sci fi story thats 100% original but it is unique enough to make it stand out in my eyes and is definitely worth listening to. Sit back and enjoy. Taylor does nothin but win🏆

Classic Dennis E. Taylor
With Ray Porter at the mic, this latest novel has all of the hallmarks of what makes for a thoroughly enjoyable D.E. Taylor audiobook: an imaginative premise, a plucky and intelligent hero, a couple of faithful friends, plenty of wit and cheeky banter, a bevy of futuristic gadgets, a lineup of bad guys that menace and threaten, and enough twists and turns to keep it all interesting. The only negative is that it all goes by too quickly. In fact, on the whole, I am unable to say much more about this one other than it entertains and doesn't have to drag its characters through nine circles of hell to accomplish it. Dare I say, it's family friendly? Well, yes, it is...so long as your family can handle the occasional profanity. "Roadkill" (a title that sounds much more disturbing than it actually turns out to be) is fine for kids and is practically YA lit. (The protagonist is still in college.) In terms of themes and political leanings, Taylor does have a bit to say about our current cultural climate, especially regarding fake news, conspiracy theories, and the persistent disunity in American society. None of it is especially overt, but those who have an ear for it certainly will get the message. On an unrelated note, some may accuse Taylor of taking cues from author Laurence E. Dahners when it comes to populating his story with underestimated, youthful protagonists, who always seem to possess more than enough ability to save the day (ahem, Mary Sue), but so what? If the trend is away from tales of revenge and bloodletting and towards tales of character and ingenuity, then I welcome it. But, I digress...."Roadkill" is a fun, warm-hearted SciFi adventure read by a masterful narrator.
