Publisher's Summary

Three 20-somethings are all that stands between an otherworldly threat and the survival of Earth in the latest thrill ride by Dennis E. Taylor, author of the Audible and New York Times best-selling Bobiverse series.

Jack Kernigan is having a bad day...a bad year...a bad life. After being booted out of MIT, he’s back in his Ohio hometown, working for the family business, facing a life of mediocrity. Then one day, out on a delivery, his truck hits...something. Something big...something furry...something invisible. And, it turns out, something not of this Earth.

Fate can play funny tricks. Which is why Jack suddenly finds himself the planet’s best hope to unravel a conspiracy of galactic proportions that could spell the end of the human race. All Jack and his best friends, Natalie and Patrick, have to defeat an alien threat is their wits, a lot of coffee, and a rather snippy AI named Sheldon. Plus, their own spaceship.

After all, if you’re going to rescue the world, the least you can get out of it is your own spaceship.

Very similar to Expeditionary Force

I love the books from Dennis E. Taylor, especially the Bobiverse series, but this book was a real let down. The inspiration for the story clearly comes from the Expeditionary Force series and there is a lot of overlap. (warning, small spoilers) For example: there are bad aliens that look like lizards and there is an artificial intelligence that loves to insult people and compare them to monkeys. At least in this book the conversations between the A.I. and the humans is less annoying and repetitive.

The conversations seemed unrealistic at times and I was disappointed at how predictable the story developed. I feel like a lot more depth was possible in the story and character development.

It is still an enjoyable book and an easy listen. I will no doubt listen to it again, because I am still a hardcore fan of Dennis E. Taylor and Ray Porter does an awesome job as narrater as usual. However, I had expected more from this book.

Very clever and entertaining

The way the story ties in with current world events is great. Although a bit childish at times it's a classic Dennis E. Taylor

taylor and porter do it again

An original story I hope will be first in a series, first contact goes splat and the fun begins. Yet another brilliant performance from both author and narrator.

Another great Dennis E. Taylor book

I'm developing a great love for Dennis E. Taylor books, along with Ray Porter's narration of them.
This story is fast moving and funny. Laugh out loud funny in places.

The least helpful review of Roadkill

Uh… yeah… well, I didn’t not like it. It was entertaining. However, I expected more from Mr. Taylor. He’s in my top five favorite authors list. My “pause whatever else you’re doing and listen to his new book” list.

So, what went wrong?

This was a little too tongue-in-cheek for me. Too rushed. Too influenced by Craig Alanson. The characters acted in unusual ways. Most of the time authors do this to force the plot along, but in this case it was different in a way I can’t quite describe. Example: “Oh, I’m the first human ever to make extraterrestrial contact? Wow. Cool. Well, it’s my bedtime. See you tomorrow.” WTF! No one acts like this! I kept thinking that this was a great story concept, but slow down! Explore the nuances. Hash out the details. This audiobook could have been half again as long and it would have been for the better.

Seriously, Dennis E. Taylor is one of my favorite authors. If you’re unfamiliar with him, don’t start here! Go listen to the Bobiverse series. Do this now! I mean, right now!

So, what went right?

Two words: Ray Porter.

That’s all I got.

Good story, but political injections.

The first two thirds of the book are fun and exciting, then the author goes left, and draws on real controversial issues, it seems most authors these days minored in political science. Just tell the story, to be fair, the politics are minimal, but very annoying, annoying to the point of hitting the 30 second skip button to get past it.

Update: Downgraded story score after hearing the characters take time to argue over AI pronouns. Also, this story is a giant rip off, no originality, did the author just copy and paste from the Expeditionary Force series? A snarky artificial intelligence and wormhole manipulation as a weapon. Zzzz...

Worst Dennis Taylor story so far

I’m a big Dennis Taylor fan overall. I loved the bobiverse and his other books so this was a bit of a surprise. Lazy, dull story. Unlikable and generally glib characters. About 90 mins in I found it difficult to pay attention to and that I didn’t care what happened next in the story so I just stopped listening. Waste of a credit.

Don't skip this one!

As an avid Dennis E Taylor fan, I had this one on pre-order. I was not disappointed. It is another quirky sci-fi adventure narrated by the absolute best narrator on Audible, Ray Porter. It has the same tenor as his other novels, but they are also voiced by Ray Porter so it is easy to imagine the stories are similar, but this is a stand alone adventure which doesn't borrow any themes from his previous novels. If you are a fan of Dennis E Taylor or just want a fun sci-fi jaunt across the solar system, don't skip this one!

I really liked the book I guess

it was a decent story it just felt like a forced money grabbing scheme and not like a world and story he inhabited. it also was very poorly veiled "criticism" of current political leaders/ideas that everyone seems to be capitalizing on. i mean to have the bad guys have orangish skin with white around the eyes and weird tufts of hair, I wonder who you are talking about. this is not a story that will be remembered in the decades to come.

Ray Porter is great no negative points to him. give him a raise.

Very entertaining and not too long.

I just finished this very entertaining book and it wasn’t that long, which was nice, in a good way. The narration is exactly what you’d expect from Porter and the story and comedy is what you’d expect from Taylor’s writing. It doesn’t have as much depth as any of the Bobiverse books but I don’t believe it was meant to. Perfect for a road trip. Wondering if he listens to a lot of Jimmy Dore though…

Dennis and Ray do it again

This Audiobook is well worth the credit. Love the premise and the humor.

Dennis E Taylor Has become my favorite SF author. I await each of his books like I did Isaac Asimov's books - yes, Dennis is that good and yes, I am that old.

I waited up until 2 a.m. CST to download this gem and when it was finally available at 2:20 a.m. I promptly fell asleep in ten minutes. Not that the material was any good - far from it - but because this is the effect Ray Porter has upon me. Ray Porter is the Vin Scully of the Audio Book World.

Classic Dennis E. Taylor

With Ray Porter at the mic, this latest novel has all of the hallmarks of what makes for a thoroughly enjoyable D.E. Taylor audiobook: an imaginative premise, a plucky and intelligent hero, a couple of faithful friends, plenty of wit and cheeky banter, a bevy of futuristic gadgets, a lineup of bad guys that menace and threaten, and enough twists and turns to keep it all interesting. The only negative is that it all goes by too quickly. In fact, on the whole, I am unable to say much more about this one other than it entertains and doesn't have to drag its characters through nine circles of hell to accomplish it. Dare I say, it's family friendly? Well, yes, it is...so long as your family can handle the occasional profanity. "Roadkill" (a title that sounds much more disturbing than it actually turns out to be) is fine for kids and is practically YA lit. (The protagonist is still in college.) In terms of themes and political leanings, Taylor does have a bit to say about our current cultural climate, especially regarding fake news, conspiracy theories, and the persistent disunity in American society. None of it is especially overt, but those who have an ear for it certainly will get the message. On an unrelated note, some may accuse Taylor of taking cues from author Laurence E. Dahners when it comes to populating his story with underestimated, youthful protagonists, who always seem to possess more than enough ability to save the day (ahem, Mary Sue), but so what? If the trend is away from tales of revenge and bloodletting and towards tales of character and ingenuity, then I welcome it. But, I digress...."Roadkill" is a fun, warm-hearted SciFi adventure read by a masterful narrator.

So bad I'm without words

Can't believe Bobiverse and this book came from the same author. It might just be that Roadkill is the worst Sifi book ever written. And I'm not even joking.

Ps. It's also a ripoff of Expeditionary force, and a really, really bad one!

Once again D.E.T. does it again and tells a compelling story with dram, humor, snark and an A.I. I really enjoyed the story and the voicing, it stands along with his other books as some of my favorites!

Young adult style

Very much a rehash of 80s wish fulfillment sci-fi movies, think Flight of the Navigator or The Last Starfighter, with three incredibly selfish leads that find, and keep, a saucer, yes literally saucer shaped, and use as they personally think best. Such a peculiar American view of the world, these 'kids' respect their parents to an extent that they go home on time to eat meals, yet mistrust governmental authority to an extent that the conceal the biggest discovery of the millennium, it's all terribly naive, somehow Trumpian. Weird details about what they ordered at the fast food take out, as if that were somehow trying to give the characters relatability. The description of the craft itself, inside and out, is horribly unimaginative, as if designed as a TV prop. The whole novel reads like an idea from the 1950's, and if you go into it with that in mind you'll be ok. Narration struggles with the youth of the leads and has to ramp up the comedic style to disguise the fact that there isn't much in the writing that's actually funny, it's all in the delivery. It's not a waste of a credit, but 10 minutes after you've finished it you won't remember anything about it.

Utter Drivel

"I feel like I should be freaked out, but I'm just rolling with it." - Says it all really.

The reason you set three kids up to find a space ship is so you can convey the wonder of such a discovery through the eyes of those not yet jaded by life. However, if your three characters are sociopaths incapable of feeling a recognisable human emotion, what you get is a story as shallow as a bowl of soup. Throughout this entire "adventure", not one of them even once failed to get a good 9 hours sleep, no matter what was going on.

The rip off of a cantankerous AI calling humans stupid monkeys is unforgivable.

I now see why Taylor writes so many Bobs - he can only write one character.

This is a childs book. A very basic story.

I like Dennis E. Taylor books on the whole, but this is unimaginitive and shallow. Spoliers probably follow.

Skippy, sorry, "Sheldon" is an obvious rip off. The story is very basic. I'd liken it to a cheap sauturday daytime kids space drama.

Wait till it comes up for free is my advice.

p.s. I marked the performance down as Ray Porter really needs to read his characters in somthing other than his standard form. They all come across exactly the same. Even the girl in this book sounded just like Bob's wife (you know what I mean if you know the Bobiverse)
