Publisher's Summary

Renegade Star, Book One

Jace Hughes is a Renegade.

That means taking almost any job that comes his way, no matter the situation. So long as he can keep his ship floating, he's free to live the life he wants. But that all changes when he meets Abigail Pryar, a nun looking for safe passage out of the system. Too bad there's something off about the cargo she's carrying.

Jace knows he shouldn't ask too many questions, but when strange sounds start coming from inside the large, metal box, he can't help but check it out. Big mistake. To make matters worse, he's being pursued by unknown ships - people who want that cargo. Does Jace give up the goods and hand over the nun ...or does he risk it all for an even bigger payout?

Renegade Atlas, book Two

The search for Earth has begun.

After barely escaping the Union's grasp, The Renegade Star is off to parts unknown. Every member of its crew is a wanted fugitive. None of them can ever return home.

But all is not lost. Thanks to Lex, a strange girl with a remarkable gift, the path to Earth has been revealed. According to ancient myth, Earth holds valuable treasures, lost technology, and endless secrets, ripe for the taking. Jace and his new friends have a chance to discover it all, but only if they can keep Lex out of the Union's grasp.

Doing so won't be easy. With enemies on all sides, the deck is stacked against them, but nothing in this universe comes easy when you're a Renegade.

If you're a fan of Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, or Leviathan Wakes, you'll love this epic, space opera thriller.

Warning: This book contains action, cussing, and general badassery. Listen at your own risk.

unbelievable stupidity by protagonist

why would anyone insist on opening a strange box in the middle of space without even trying to figure out what is inside first?

it could be a bomb, a plague, ANYTHING.

the protagonist constantly acts like a hysterical 14 year old girl, jumping to idiotic conclusions, ignoring glaring security issues, ignoring the very things the author wants us to believe he is an expert in.

characters act out of character and outside any logic inside the books own world, it keeps going and going. I had hoped it was just the beginning, but the book doubles down on this the further the plot goes.

why would a loan shark act like a pirate overlord who is at the same time also a mass murdering psychopath who enjoys killing off the very people who would get him paid?? and all that without our streetwise Mr. Knowitall jackass of main character knowing or suspecting this?

neither loan sharks nor pirates are in the business of simply killing for sport especially when they have financial incentive to exactly NOT do so.

I could write a dozen more paragraphs - it's neverending this stuff.

what makes me really hate this book is how easily the author has hundreds to thousands of people gruesomly murdered for no reason other than a throwaway description of how bad some guy is.

I could come up wit a dozen ways to make the plot logical and be consistent with author descriptions of cast motivations and the settting.

nothing in this book makes any sense.
the maon character is supposed to be a hard boiled alpha but acts like a bumbling hysterical moron.

people who know they need protection do not get any.

the protagonist whose job it is to stealthily move a group of people around ignores ships that are OBVIOUSLY following him, gawks at a group of pirates blockading a system without enabling the cloaking device that is mentioned dozens of times and waits - WITH the people he is supposed to protect - until he is shot at.

THEN he enables the cloak. after the ship has taken damage.

the incompetence is so staggering it makes no sense

I despise such plot devices and lazy story telling

Ripoff plot and huge body count for no real reason

This ought to be very popular with 14-year-old boys, but it's not for me. I did listen to the entire book (two books, actually, but not sure why), but it was a struggle to finish. The plot is straight out of a hundred other sci-fi stories, the characters are completely unbelievable, and the protagonist is a jerk with a foul mouth. The body count was huge, and the "good guys" are the ones who killed the most. The book has no redeeming qualities, in my opinion.

Luke Daniels does a good job, but even he couldn't save this ripoff.

What a terrible book! Blech

Luke Daniels’ excellent narration couldn’t save this turd. Poor character development, half-plagiarized story, and general predictability make this book a waste of time imo.

Good story, but way to much GD's

Good story, but way to much GD's

The story was good, but is not suited for young ears. Way way to much God D's in the book. A note to the author. You don't have to have every other word God D's. It doesn't add to the story. You could literally edit out the GD's and the story would be better.

Too much cursing - story line was okay

There was too much cursing, including the f* word. Maybe if there were no cursing, I might continue with the story, but I am tired of the filth coming out of the characters mouths. Basically, it's an intergalactic ship chase for a girl who can find the way back to earth. Way too many bad guys, not enough good guys. Narration is much better with more than one person, and some of the male characters were beginning to sound alike.

A great book to get lost in for the weekend

If you have burnt through all the new great space operas such as Bobiverse, Frontlines, Expeditionary Forces, Undying Mercs, Omega Force, etc.. and are looking for something great and fun to get lost in, then this is PERFECT. In terms of sci-fi, it is easy to follow, more on the hard sci-fi side (not that it is highly "scientific", but it isn't outlandishly unbelievable either), has a great narrator, and keeps you interested with those occasional "no no no!.. phew!" moments of yelling at your speakers.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Sci-Fi

Renegade Star has me hooked for the series! This is a wonderful twist on the space drama scifi that is held together by a no holds barred protagonist and his band of well-intentioned misfits. I only wish I had not put off Audible's recommendation of this series for so long!

SciFi Snark at its best

Luke Daniels is one of my favorite Narrators and as usual does a fantastic job on character voices.
Like all good stories this one develops and grows as you read or listen to them. This story draws you the reader or listener into the complexities of its universe. Well worth the money or credits spent.
Listen to a sample you’ll see for yourself, so yes five stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great Start To The Series

Really enjoyed this start to the series , as per normal you can't go far wrong with any books that Luke Daniels Involved with. Book 1 started well with a good storyline and some great and it just carried on into book 2, looking forward to starting books 3&4 this virus lock down is costing me a fortune in books but it should give me a good chance to get through most of this series.
You keep writing them Mr Chaney and if Luke Daniels keeps narrating them then y will keep listening to them.

Not going to lie, I had quite a few laugh out loud

Book 1
I came across this book via a sci-fi newsletter I signed up to. I have to say I am glad I gave it a shot. All three books in the series were all combined into one audible book, which is a bonus. The main character was just so relatable, you could connect with him pretty easily. Meeting the other characters was great too, it added more layers to the story, more layers to the main character. I hope in the rest of the series you get to know the other characters more, what makes them tick, how they came to be who they are.

Looking forward to the second in the series. Also looking forward to exploring the world, the Author has built.

Book 2
I liked that with each new book in the series, you get to explore all the characters more. It not a one-man show, everyone plays their part, even the AI. You see them adapting, changing to survive, to make sure their family survives. Really enjoying the world exploring, even the technology being explored is great.

Not going to lie, I had quite a few laugh out loud moments. I did look like a crazy person, walking down a shopping aisle, giggling.

A fast-paced space opera with great characters

I normally have a tough time with audiobooks outside the LitRPG genre, but this story, along with Luke's excellent narrating, had no trouble holding my attention and looking forward to my next listening session. My only "complaint" is that Luke read rather fast, to the point of ignoring punctuation. It didn't bother me in the least but it was something I took note of. I'm halfway through the next combo pack and just bought the third.

Simplistic

If you're new to sci-fi and have no great expectations, then you will enjoy this. However, I found the narrator's voice OTT at times, which spoilt it for me.

I found the idiotic behaviour of Jace, the Captain, to be really annoying, especially when it took him forever to figure out that they had been tagged, which was why the Union could locate them at every turn. I would think most of us figured that one out within the first couple of minutes.

All that aside, this story did have the making of a good plot, with a few tweaks.
