Story
Young Cally is an apprentice within the most unusual order of sorcerers in the known world: the only one that forbids its members from using their powers to kill. Despite his lowly status, Cally's chosen by the Master of the Order to join a delegation to see their allies the Lannovians. The meeting will be historic: 60 years ago, the Order's enemies attacked them with a host of demons, forcing the Order to trap the monsters inside their own citadel and seal it shut with impenetrable wards. The trick worked so well the Order hasn't been able to get it back open since.

Story
Two hundred years ago, aliens invaded Earth. A violent war followed. The enemy won. Some of us escaped, most of us didn’t. On Proxima they flourished - the invasion forgotten. On Earth we floundered - the horror began. Their world is advanced, peaceful, and secure. Our world is broken, savage, and overrun. A new invasion is coming. A hunger that has swallowed half the universe. They don’t care which planet we live on. They want to end us all. But where there is life, there is hope. And where there is hope, there are heroes. This time, vengeance will be ours.

When Minalan the Spellmonger was exiled from his beloved mageland of Sevendor by Prince Tavard, his friend Duke Anguin made him Count Palatine of the Magelaw, a vast realm in the Alshari Wilderlands with which Minalan is all too familiar. After the goblin invasion, the province is devastated, ruined, and peopled almost only by freed slaves. But Minalan has brought his recovering wife and family into exile with him, and he views their impoverished fief as an opportunity to build a new City of Magi in the wilderness.

But those seven bottles of mead were more than just a folk blessing. As Lord Minalan the Spellmonger began his honeymoon on a decadent river barge with his very pregnant bride, he had no idea that the occasion would have anything more complicated than eating, drinking, and making love on the agenda. But a frantic message from one of the Tree Folk indicating he and Alya may be in danger compels him to skip the lazy repose and travel to a far away ruin to speak with a possibly crazy Alka Alon mage - Lilastien, the Sorceress of Sartha Wood.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

1000 Years After the Breakers What Happened?
Big fan of both Ray Chase and Edward W. Robertson, having enjoyed all 9 books in the Breakers Series, so I looked forward to these books carrying the saga forward. I know that 1000 years had passed so all the characters from the Breakers would be long dead but these books took awhile to get going. It seemed like the most interesting and important thing that happened in all three of these books occurred right at the end of the 3rd book, the return of the Swimmers and the introduction of a 2nd alien species. Which creatures (spoiler alert) we never get to meet in any way because we get caught up in some corporate space wars.
True, Robertson had to establish a whole new set of worlds and characters, (which he did with the Locker with its gangs and military spacers and the hive with its young genius billionaire and techno nerds) but that took three books to accomplish. So maybe we get to meet the new aliens and find out why they don't want us traveling beyond the solar system in book 3?
I certainly hope so, and that audible will get the issues with further books in the series resolved.
As always, kudos for the fierce, powerful female characters and the totally cool with that and equally interesting male characters.
I guess I'm spoiled by Robertson's incredible feat of creating the Breakers amazing journey and I miss those guys! In any case, this mild disappointment won't keep me from reading more Robertson or from downloading book 3 if it becomes available for audible and in the mean time starting on the 3rd series of Robertson books available here.
BTW Ray Chase is the perfect reader for these books. All the characters are given unique voices. His energy rises and falls with the action. He's always got good pronunciation and genius understanding of how the lines should read. In 12 books, there's only one place where I would have read the line differently. Plus his female voices sound female without sounding like imitation women. Big fan!

Enjoyed the inclusion of a complete Rada backstory
After ordering this, I quickly realized that I had previously purchased Books 1&2 of this series. While I could have requested a refund, I decided to listen to Book 0, Rebel, based on the strength of Edward W. Robertson's writing skills and enjoyed it so much that I decided to continue to listen to books 1&2 and forget the refund, it was that good.
If you haven't listened to this series previously, I highly recommend it if you are interested in s skillfully written and engaging story and having the pleasure of a top-tier narrator in Ray Chase performance.

excellent narration great space opera
loved the narrator's performance he lent real depth to the characters
thi should become a classic in our genre as it explores key issues of modern life and a supposed life in the greater solar system. there is enough science in it to get your "what if" glands pumping and just the right blend of plot twust and turns to keep it interesting. well worth it

Solidly mediocre and uninspiring.
I listened to the Breakers series many years ago, not realizing that this series had been released as a semi-sequel to Breakers. To start, I appreciate that this is 1k years in the future and based heavily on Breakers, yet is can stand alone as its own story. That's about where my appreciation ends, however. Rebel Stars 0-2 is just boring, lazy writing. Its not awful, but it is not enjoyable. I only finished it because I feel an obligation to always finish a book I buy.
The story is full of ex-machinas, convenient plot skips, and miracle escapes with little to no explanation. The science part of the science fiction is heavily lacking. Opportunities to expound on the technology, the universe, its history, the nature of space in and of itself are constantly missed. Obvious holes in logic are used as plot defining characteristics. For example, the use of junk dumped out an airlock as chaff/shrapnel for a tailing ship. This is done several times yet no one had the bright idea to develop a purpose built projectile for exactly that situation? Instead, the heroes just manage to wing and a prayer it to safety. There is no suspense, no twists, not even a close call or two. Its such a boring, trite read.
This book is great if you have no real interest in science fiction. If you want something that actually has depth and detail, go elsewhere. Lastly, the overarching alien story is not original or interesting, it feels like a convenience to allow the author to get in some quippy jokes and phrases. This book was not at all memorable. It is a massive let down from Breakers.

The story itself was acceptable, large scale (technically), but the story did not manage to convey that. The narrator struggled with certain voices, but he certainly tried. The narrative flow was pretty consistent but not amazingly surprising. It was alright.
