Publisher's Summary

Margaret Brinton keeps her promises, and the one she is most determined to keep is the promise to protect her heart.

Warwishire, England, 1810

Fooled by love once before, Margaret vows never to be played the fool again. To keep her vow, she attends a notorious matchmaking party intent on securing the perfect marital match: a union of convenience to someone who could never affect her heart. She discovers a man who exceeds all her hopes in the handsome and obliging rake, Mr. Northam.

There’s only one problem: his meddling cousin, Lord Williams, won’t leave Margaret alone. Condescending and high-handed, Lord Williams lectures and insults her. When she refuses to give heed to his counsel, he single-handedly ruins Margaret’s chances for making a good match - to his cousin or anyone else. With no reason to remain at the party, Margaret returns home to discover her father has promised her hand in marriage - to Lord Williams.

Under no conditions will Margaret consent to marrying such an odious man. Yet as Lord Williams inserts himself into her everyday life, interrupting her family games and following her on morning walks, winning the good opinion of her siblings and proving himself intelligent and even kind, Margaret is forced to realize that Lord Williams is exactly the man she’d hoped to marry before she’d learned how much love hurt. When paths diverge and her time with Lord Williams ends, Margaret is faced with her ultimate choice: keep the promises that protect her or break free of them for one more chance at love. Either way, she fears her heart will lose.

Frustrating and DULl

I read so many historical romance and I’m 99% sure this is the worst one I’ve ever read. Number one there is ZERO romance. 97% of the book is the heroine refusing to give in to love. The hero is full and the really nothing about him interests me. They could have done this so much better... I do love Justine Eyre as a narrator so I was hopeful for this novel, but I’m disappointed in the story. I am shocked it’s so well reviewed. Seriously I’d like a refund and all the hours of my life I wasted on this novel.

Spoiled heroine

Didn’t care for the heroine. She grew up with loving, indulgent parents and two close siblings. All she appeared to suffer in her whole life was a broken engagement and she acted as if she’d suffered through some horrible past. She was also too quick to blame the hero for something her sister does when she really bares the responsibility because of something she says. Never read a more self-centered heroine.

lukewarm and only one point of view

so the story had promise but The main character was very self-deprecating and self-defeating. soft sabotaging. and all the other bad self stuff that you can think of. to be honest I'm surprised she didn't throw herself into the lake. and I just didn't like her. you know the phrase unequally yoked I think the main guy was ugly yoked with the main character

Nice and Clean

Although a bit drawn out, I enjoyed this clean romance. It would have been better with a longer epilogue and shorter chapters in the middle. It felt rushed in the end. I enjoyed the two main characters. I look forward to more from this author . The narrator is excellent.

Nice story, but not my favorite

The story was well written and the narration was enjoyable. My only complaint is I didn’t get why Edward wanted to be with Margaret. She was bitter and didn’t have a positive interaction with him until more that half-way through the book. I understand that Margaret had been hurt, but she seemed to take her desire to protect herself to an extreme. I enjoyed parts, but not sure if this is a story that I will reread.

Great Book!

This was a very enjoyable book to listen to! I am surprised that this is a debut novel for this author! I loved her writing style/voice. I thought the characters were enjoyable and this book reminded me a bit of Pride and Prejudice. Margaret made me laugh and I loved her interactions with Gregory and also her relationship with her brother. I am excited for another book by Garriott! Highly recommend for fans of regency romances. Tedious and Repetitive.

Sadly the story is so bad that you start to pick up faults on the narrator. Is it the soft whispery voice, the not so convincing male voices, or the mispronounced English words. However, it must be hard to work with poor material. The story seem to be based on a brother and sister, who have a spiteful, competitive relationship. Then a pair of cousins who have the same rather nasty relationship. Neither pair worry about who else gets involved in their childish games. She spends the whole time setting out her plans, claiming she wants a certain type of life. When she achieves her plan, she no longer wants that. It is full of "Shall I shan't I", "Should I shouldn't I" and it drags on and on..... Saying she has learnt from her experience, but then she must not let the pass effect her future. The hero, seems to be suffering continual from a "temper tantrum". Being a "Baron", justifies his rude behaviour, he declares his feeling then backs off on a number of occasions. This such a cumbersome relationship, it is a wonder they ever get together. The end is so convoluted, that except for dragging the story on and on and on......, it makes no sense.

storyline recommended

narrator had troubles with her vowels which really detracted from the story which was a shame. eg for hall she would pronounce hole. I feel sorry for the author as she writes well.
