Během cesty po Moravě se panoš Ota setká se svou vzdálenou sestřenicí Miladou ze Zástřizlí. Je zoufalá a prosí ho o pomoc. Žije na Krakovci nedaleko Prostějova, kde se v poslední době stalo několik podivných událostí, které vyvrcholily vraždou jejího manžela. Co je však nejhorší, z jeho smrti podezírají ji. Panoš Ota se obrátí na svého pána, ale ten nemá chuť a ani pravomoc tu vyšetřovat. Navíc se musí věnovat jinému zločinu, který poškodil českého krále. Jenže pak dojde k pokusu unést Miladu. To Oldřicha z Chlumu přesvědčí, že nejde o obyčejný zločin. Společně začnou rozplétat neuvěřitelný příběh, jehož nitky vedou hluboko do minulosti.
