Promising Overview, But Don’t Stop Here

This is a well-presented and accessible introduction to magick and witchcraft, particularly suited to those just starting out. The narrator does a lovely job of bringing the material to life, and the tone is generally clear, practical, and encouraging.

The book offers a broad overview of topics such as spellwork, moon phases, divination, and astrology. It’s a reasonable starting point if you’re looking for a gentle initiation into the world of modern witchcraft - nothing here is overly complicated or intimidating.

However, there are moments where the book seems to overstate what it delivers. In several places, the author suggests that by reading a single chapter on a complex subject - astrology, for instance - the reader is now "conversant" or equipped to practise it. In reality, these topics are incredibly deep and nuanced, often requiring years of study to understand properly. A brief overview may spark interest, but it certainly doesn’t offer mastery.

I wouldn’t want to discourage anyone from picking it up - it has value as a broad entry point - but for those looking for something with more depth and nuance, I’d recommend Witch by Lisa Lister, which goes further beneath the surface and offers a more layered perspective on both the inner and outer work of witchcraft.
