Publisher's Summary

Pathological mind games. Covert and overt put-downs. Triangulation. Gaslighting. Projection. These are the manipulative tactics survivors of malignant narcissists are unfortunately all too familiar with. As victims of silent crimes where the perpetrators are rarely held accountable, survivors of narcissistic abuse have lived in a war zone of epic proportions, enduring an abuse cycle of love-bombing and devaluation - psychological violence on steroids. From how to heal our addiction to the narcissist to how to recognize a covert narcissist, Shahida Arabi's articles on narcissistic abuse have gained renown as some of the most accurate and in-depth depictions of this terrifying trauma, resonating with millions of survivors all over the world and receiving endorsements from numerous mental health professionals. In this essay compilation, listeners can enjoy some of her most popular articles as well as new thought pieces on narcissistic abuse: what therapists have to say about malignant narcissists and how children of narcissistic parents can become trapped in the trauma repetition cycle. Survivors are offered new insights on what it means to be both a survivor and a thriver of covert manipulation and trauma. Power teaches us that it is important to not only understand the tactics of toxic personalities but also to recognize and combat the effects of narcissistic abuse; it guides the survivor to learning, growing, healing and most importantly of all - owning their agency to rebuild their lives and transform their powerlessness into victory.

Good

Narrator's voice is a bit robotic. Took a while to get use to. Book content is great.

A “Powerful” book

I heard so much confirmation of what I was going through my whole life, including now. Even things I had previously only thought in my own head as a contrary response to a couple things other narcissistic abuse experts have said. It’s an extremely affirming, uplifting and emotionally supportive book, I highly recommend it. In fact, after a bit of time passes to allow what I am processing from it to fully absorb, I will re-listen to it in order to absorb more of the caring and loving support and information it provides that I was not able to absorb in and process all at one time.

Horrible performer

The story is gripping but the reader sounds like a bot. The voice is distracting.

Unnecessarily repetitive and almost unbearable performance

This book is best for those unfamiliar with characteristics and affects of dealing with significant others who suffer from NPD, NOT those who grew up with an NPD parent.

Since I have read many books on this topic, I was quite bored while listening. I kept hoping some new nugget of information would pop up which led me to keep going.

Couple that with how unbearable the performance was and I was sometimes cringing while listening. She has this strange California type accent, like sometimes sounding like her chin is jutting out while talking or emphasizing words that end with the letter D. It is hard to describe without hearing it but I will absolutely never listen to another audible book dictated by her. Absolutely deplorable.

One of the few audible books I regret purchasing.

I would recommend anyone not at all familiar with NPD and suspicious of being involved in a relationship with a person with NPD to purchase this audible, as long as you don’t care about the dictation. Sample it first.

Book content is incredible IF....

Book is incredible IF you can get past a computerized/automated female voice reading! So annoying and distracting! I couldn’t endure it. I got a refund and bought the print version. Such a shame that I couldn’t listen....

Eye opening

This author touches on words and explanations that make so much sense to someone who has lived with someone that expressed this behavior. Made things that happened understandable.

Lacks substance.

This book promises understanding but lacks the substance to bring to light the subject matter. It is filled with mixed metaphors and blanket statements that sound like a snake oil salesman who offers a cure for all ills, but ultimately cures nothing.

100% Validation

This is the most spot on description of what I survived. This has helped my healing/recovery in so many ways. It helps my emotions catch up to my intellectual understanding of this abuse. Invaluable resource used in conjunction with traditional therapy and alternative modalities that develop self-soothing and self-love. Thank you a million times!

Author is in anger phase and it shows in book. Not for healing!

In the beginning of this book I felt vindicated and relieved i wasn't going mad but then I found continuous repetition of the same concepts with different scenarios in every following chapter. As I was just recognizing my partners traits and still in the marriage there became a point that this book started causing me anxiety with some of the darker examples it gave. After about 9 chapters i got tired of the repetitive angry rants and went in search of a chapter on healing. There is one with minimal advice and lacking in the same passion the author has when describing the pain and unfulfilling towards the goal of healing. This book is written by someone still in the anger phase of her journey and seems to be geared towards someone who has just broken off the relationship. I did get some clarity towards what was happening and some anxiety towards my future, overall minimally helpful as I'm sure I could have gotten that same clarity from any book on this subject.

Good content if you can get over the horrific “reading”

Wow. The reading, if you can call it that, is uncomfortable to listen to at best. A good book, but I would be inclined to buy and read rather than listen to the horrific narrative, possibly the worst voiceover I’ve ever listened to.

The Title of This Book Should be ...

Survivoring but don't bother thriving because I can't tell you how to do it or I certainly don't in this book

While I definitely recommend this book to anyone who has had a MAGICAL EXPERIENCE the author should have called this book " life is $&&-, after abuse but you can survive don't bother thriving go to yoga and live in misery ignore all abuse of others and if you have been shafted well that's how it is supposed to be " , the author certainly provides some information that is worth reading or Listening to but basically she does prove that old adage " Put Yourself First," in my opinion some of the advice and experience some of the advice about therapy is not only flawed but misleading but perhaps she didn't have a wide enough example or personal experience to know any better and she has no advise on how to fix the problems it has caused just " self care "! What surely self is mentioned way to much in these books and besically she says your life will be shit but let it continue to happen and get some exercise you'll still be miserable but hey ho!

the voice is very awful but content is amazing

The voice artist is very monatone. it is very hard to engage with and listen to because of this. However the content of the book is spot on. really helpful to anybody who has had contact with a NARC.
