I was horrified with how funny this story. So many things that in the real world is not acceptable. But the charaters made me laugh. This was my favourite book in the series.

Giancarlo (Gin) Vitale is a ‘kill now, ask questions later’ sort of mobster. He’s given his favourite hammer the pet name of ‘Silvy’ (Is this a nod to Maxwell’s Silver Hammer?) To screw with someone who owes the family a lot of money, Gin bids and wins the guy’s virgin 22 yo son, Ash, at a slave auction. Gin allows the extremely well-equipped Ash to pay off the debt through sexual favours and the two soon develop feelings for each other. But Ash’s father still wants to control Ash’s life and other business partners also make life difficult for the Vitales—looks like Silvy’s going to get quite the workout.

I felt discombobulated by this: the light, almost playful tone belies some very serious topics such as sexual slavery and child abuse, and some very violent scenes as Gin and some of the other brothers turn those who cross the family to pulp. Quite rightly, Ash is initially horrified by the violence, but Gin charms him enough to accept the family business. I too have come to accept the violence in these dark romances but I really struggled with Ash’s inability to tell Gin about his father’s violent demands for more money—I just couldn’t make sense of it. Other than that, this was entertaining 🎧 and Declan Winters gave another fantastic performance: he does a great job on the NY Italian accents!
