I was skeptical... but this book is the real deal

Up until I saw the title, I had never heard of Aubrey Marcus and initially reluctant to buy his audiobook. Often with health/ self-improvement, authors act like academics, citing research that supports their ideas but not actually critically engaging in those fields of health. Marcus' book covers so many aspects of health, I was certain he'd do the same and the truth is he usually does. BUT, it's not hard to find the studies and research he talks about and his ideas generally aligned with some of the personal research into eating, sleeping and working that I had done myself.

On top of that, he breaks down the ideas in each chapter with a general introduction, a look at the unhealthy aspect of each subject and then a practical way to address these issues in daily life. I love it! Seriously, I hate motivational speakers and authors who sell promises of 'a better you' but Marcus focuses on a more pure and honest form of self-improvement.

The general Idea of the book (focusing on one day at a time) is not new but Marcus does talk about some principals that have alluded the world of health for a while. He refutes general opinion and commits to searching for the truth. I think he has found a lot of it too. The great thing about the structure of this book is that you can really pick and choose the chapters where you may need the most help. Although, I recommend committing to the entire book and listening from beginning to end.

I don't need to be a CEO or aspiring business founder to NEED this book. I'm a teacher, so looking after myself and 'owning the day' is super important to me and my students. I appreciated being told almost exactly what to do to improve my day's beginning, middle, and end. Yet, Marcus is also super explicit about tailoring your own routines to fit your lifestyle and body. This is so often ignored by writers (and readers) but Marcus writes in a way that feels like he is coaching you in a one-on-one session.

The one criticism I have is that this book seems geared more towards men. I'm not offended by this at all but I did buy the audiobook for me and my wife to listen to and she simply was not as engaged as I was (in the anecdotal aspects, not the ideas themselves). The book was specifically advertised as being for both men and women but I feel like there are only snippets of wisdom tailored to female health. However, Marcus does a humble appeal to the modern male from his success to his writing/reading manner. It is good to hear a figure like this come head to head with typically UNmasculine issues that every man needs to face like sex, reflection and self acceptance. Perhaps, a specifically feminine version of the book could have a greater influence on female readers.

Overall, this book has really helped me to become a holistically healthier person. I recommend it to everyone and know that I'm going to be reading it again and again in the future.

Absolute beginner self help

Aside from plugging his own products and some very dodgy science and nutrition; this could be a good book if you’re very new to the self help genre. It’s super duper basic and slightly cliche but could have a few useful nuggets if you’re totally new to the “live your best life” scene.
Like hydrate and sleep more. Unplug from social media and cuddle your Bae.

Slightly disappointed as I did have high hopes for this guy- liking some podcasts I’d heard and his creativity of literary work on instagram.

Phew... I made it through

I did have to speed up Aubrey to 1.5x, and just grit and bare it however.

Tim ferris called, he wants his everything back.

There is nothing new here, except for Aubreys cringe worthy delivery of uncited bro science mixed in with his Basic AF toilet humour.

Why doesn't Rogan give him some pointers on comedy atleast?

Summary:
Drink water
Eat healthy fats
Don't eat processed crap
Sleep in a dark room
Journal
Buy some supplements (preferably onnit)
Do some kegels
Etc

There was such a good premise for a book Of this type philosophically speaking, but none of it found here. So I'll leave you with a quote from seneca:

Begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life.

And here's a quote from aubrey:
Death is DTF :/

Not a Fan

I had such high hopes for this book and what I hoped to be able to take away and apply to my own life. Whilst Aubrey does list some beneficial things to do these are no more then common sense or what have been spread about for years in self help / personal development circles. One takeaway I did have was the tip to listen to popcasts of authors before you buy their books - I wish I had done this before I purchased this book as it would of saved me the disappoinment. Maybe worthwhile for someone new to self development books or who has a lot more time, money and resources than I to partake in IV vitamins drips, earbuds for vitamin D or masks to help improave excercise. other than that eat healthy, excercise, get sleep and you'll generally be on your way to better days.

Hype & pseudoscience

Lots of advertising with questionable science
Engagingly read by the author but that’s about it

Great for my bro not my sis

I took away from this book some great things like nutrition information and loved the morning cocktail recipe.
Found the book very ‘bloke’, focused and some of the descriptive sentences cringe worthy..... not a book I’d recommend to my sisters but to my brother yes.

Just incredible.

Aubrey is incredible.
You won't regret picking up this book.

It's not another self-help book, a plan to fix your whatever it is you want to fix in 30 days. It's a beautifully written and narrated walkthrough of a perfect day, with the aim that - when you finish the book- that you attempt your own perfect day. Maybe just once.

It's down to earth and approachable, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Disappointing

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

After listening to Tim Ferriss' podcast with Aubrey I bought this book straight away with high hopes. Unfortunately I was completely disappointed. It seems to be some basic recommendations (like drinks some water in the morning), repeated ad nauseam with some really incorrect science and pseudo-science thrown in. He had some great ideas and seemed so interesting on the podcast but there was none of that in this.
