About this listen

“Maguire’s work is melodic, symphonic, and beautiful; it is dejected and biting and brave. How great that people flock to these magical novels.”
Los Angeles Times Book Review

Bestselling author Gregory Maguire’s remarkable series, The Wicked Years, comes full circle with this, his fourth and final excursion across a darker, richer, more complex landscape of “the magical land of Oz.” Out of Oz brilliantly reimagines L. Frank Baum’s world over the rainbow as wracked with social unrest—placing Glinda the good witch under house arrest and having the cowardly Lion on the lam from the law as the Emerald City prepares to make war on Munchkinland. Even Dorothy makes a triumphant return in Maguire’s magnificent Oz finale—tying up every loose green end of the series he began with his classic Wicked, the basis for the smash hit Broadway musical.

Sure Wicked was a great interpretation of OZ before Dorothy, but Out of OZ left me with goosebumps. There's not much else to say. The conclusion to the series is gripping. It's got plenty of twists and what I love is that our protagonist doesn't buy into the drama surrounding her. She's unique and powerful, and she never quite understands that, though she understands a lot of things others don't. The narration was great and draws you back into OZ. I'm sad the series has come to an end, but I know have a beautiful memory of the story. What a great way to re-invent such a treasured classic!

The best book in the series!

what a thrilling 4 part quest i have been on, i think that was roughly 50 hours of listening and i feel sad to say goodbye to so many characters that i have spent soooo much time with. Ironically the main 2 characters of the play end up probably having the least amount of mentions or time alive in the 4 books.
I don't know how they pulled the beloved play from these stories as there is almost no relation. The books are far darker and sexual than the family play depicts. I almost feel cheated by the play and movie now that i have read the books. The depths, the intricacies, twists and turns are a true testament to the writer. All i can truly say about this last book is that, after 24 hours, i do feel the ending is cut short and unexpected but that's not to say this 4th instalment is nothing short of a masterpiece

Bravo 👏 👏👏🫣

A bit tedious and lots of detail but no resolution at the end. Too many loose ends.
