Story
After Hellebore Narcissus exposed my secret, he claimed me as his, a pawn in a deadly Faerie game I’m only just beginning to understand. Now, I’m caught in a complex web of bloodthirsty courts, ancient feuds, and the lust for ultimate power. To expose Hellebore and recover the Darken’s soulstone, I must become an expert at navigating the cunning world of the Fae and my new life at the academy - all the while resisting my true mate, the Winter Prince.
Publisher's Summary
Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Holly Black, this first book in a dark and action-packed new series is impossible to put down!
Light magic is forbidden.
Dark magic spells death.
Haven has both.
After the Prince of Penryth saved her from captivity, 17-year-old Haven Ashwood spends her days protecting the kind prince and her nights secretly fighting the monsters outside the castle walls.
When one of those monsters kidnaps Prince Bell, Haven must ally with Archeron Halfbane and his band of immortals to rescue her friend.
Her quest takes her deep into the domain of a warped and vicious queen where the rules are simple: break her curse or die.
Lost in a land of twisted magic and fabled creatures, Haven finds herself unprepared, not just for the feelings she develops for Archeron, but for the warring powers raging inside her.
Her rare and forbidden type of magic may be their only hope...but mixing light and dark comes with a steep price.
Haven’s soul.
Faced with impossible love, heartbreaking betrayals, and a queen intent on destroying the realm, only one thing remains certain.
Haven must shatter the curse or it will devour everything she loves.

A great story with a fantastic narrator
This was a random recommendation from the Internet Bots and boy am I glad I acquiesced! A great story with interesting characters and for once no YA Insta Love that is unrealistic and forced upon us. Whilst the foundation for a few relationships in the future have been laid, it feels very natural. There are also varying depictions of love that make the bonds depicted in the novel more interesting - familial, platonic, lover...all of which set in a great world with interesting magic systems still to be explored (but that didn't feel lacking in the first tome).
My only gripe is that the book didn't really stand on it's own - although it's very clearly a series, it did bug me that even a small arc wasn't completed in this book. None of the main goals accomplished, and even the side goals have only been set up with no temporary resolution. Although it's a great spot to end it from a cliff-hanger, want-to-read-more point of view, I still think it lacks a little closure to by a book by itself. That said, I have the next audiobook downloaded and ready to listen to so it's not too much of a hindrance.
*NOTES FOR THE AUDIOBOOK, AS READ BY VANESSA MOYEN*
I'm very particular about audiobooks, not just content of the book itself but of the reader, and boy did Vanessa do a spectacular job. Great distinction of narrative voices (despite the number of male 'villainous' characters), and great inflection and tone for the various perspectives portrayed. A great audiobook narrator to be my first audiobook in about 3 years. Would recommend.

3 star listen
I’m not sure how I feel about this book.
I feel like it could get better but there’s so much to read out there.
The characters are ok.
Everything just needs more growth.
Narration was ok. 3 stars.
Just not overly invested right now. This was recommended to me so I’m sure it gets better.
Main character is a human with light and dark magic and other characters think she can break the curse plaguing the land.
Smut? No
I would say this is a YA novel
World building needs work.

This is definitely the first book in a long series. This isn't really a book so much as the start of a big story. If you want the story, then you'll need the whole series. Not to say this wasn't an awesome book. I would definitely recommend it and hope you do decide to read it. Enjoy!

A very maybe book
I’m still undecided whether I want to start the second book, but after I finished listening I got the feeling that I didn’t even comprehend half that happened.
Whether that was the narration or the actual writing I can’t tell. There’s so much potential in this series that fell short, but I have a feeling I’ll end up getting the second one

Interesting
The story overall was rather enjoyable, despite the constant over the top descriptions and the awful narrator. The narrator seemed to get stuck after every few words and would pause too long on commas.
There was some repetitiveness in the beginning (They would mask their face with a mask.)
I enjoyed most of the characters, though wasn't fond of Haven's "I'm not like other girls" mentality where she would look down on other women for liking the current fashions, dresses, and so on. It would have been fine if she just had her reasons for not liking those things for herself (which she does) but her looking down on others just made me dislike her a bit, as well as her over the top anger at the smallest infractions-It just didn't fit the situation a lot of the time.
I was left confused by the love interests as both seem to be married which made that part of the book hard to like.
I did enjoy the world overall, and am interested in finding out what will happen once Haven breaks the curse.

Great for fans of Sara J Maas
I was given an free audiobook for my fair and unbiased review.
First off - I love the cover art of this book. It’s beautifully done. I also love the narrator that they got to do the audiobook. She’s a perfect match for the story.
More importantly - this book is a SOLID match for those who liked the Throne of Glass series and ACOTAR series by Sara J Maas. I can definitely see heavy influence from both series within this story and the characters that it follows.
I feel like we could have gotten a little more history of the world and mythology that built it, but overall, I enjoyed the pieces of the world we saw.
The main character is very akin to both Aelin and Feyre in the way that she happens to have a rough past and winds up somehow being “the chosen one” (although I think it’s unfair to call it a trope because no one really I’m likes to read fantasy novels about the not chosen one). She is likable and determined.
The supporting characters - I enjoyed the Solis (I think that’s right, audiobook, remember?) women a lot more than any of the other characters. I can see two potential “major love interests” for our main character, outside of the best friend prince - who proves to be entirely useless throughout the book - and I’m not thrilled with the idea of either of them, really.
All in all, I think it’s a solid first book in the series and I look forward to seeing where it goes. I hope to see more history of the world, more character development in the supporting cast and maybe something to surprise me with the love interests!

The story is good but a little unoriginal. I didn’t like the narrators voice in my personal opinion but what can you do? I got used to it. Overall, I still found myself frantically googling when the next book will be released. Would definitely recommend to people who are fans of Sara J Maas.

I enjoy the banter between Archeron and his companions but when Havem shows up it's just like children bickering and nothing important happens. a lot of Haven's pov is her bickering about Archeron doing this or that and it got draining for me. I'm hoping book 2 is better but it was an overall good book.

A gripping dark fantasy that is ripe with magic!
This audiobook. I don't even know how to accurately put into words how this book stole my every thought and brain cell. I was enraptured within the first 2 chapters and I couldn't stop listening until there was no more left.
I always feel skeptical when someone compares their book to SJM or Holly Black, but this story warrants ALL THE ATTENTION AND PRAISE! It got me out of a reading slump and I was absorbed entirely. I became one with the story and I'm #sorrynotsorry to my family for ignoring them.
The world building is incredible. I felt like I could actively see each scene unfold and the more that was explored, the more I wanted to be transported into the world. These are some of the most fleshed out characters I've ever listened to and they're not just fleshed out, they're COMPLEX. As the story unfolds, dynamics stir and change and it feels effortless.
I'm a super fan of Beauty and the Beast retellings, and this has to be my fave by far. It's gender-swapped and the MC, Haven, is Prince Bell's royal companion guard. A girl guarding a dude. YES PLEASE.
Haven has been put through the ringer in her life, but she her wants are simple: protect Bell and find out where she came from. The first one trumps all others in her mind which makes her the most loyal friend ever. She's lived with hardship and endured discrimination at every turn, but she lets it drip off her like rain water.
Prince Bell is taken by the Shadow Queen and Haven must fight tooth and nail to find him and bring him back. She has to wade the waters with a band of immortal Solis to break the curse that ravages the land and IT IS AMAZING!
I wish I could give this story 10 stars. It will forever be a favorite and I'm salivating for book 2 like whoa. You'd be a fool to pass this up!
The narrator had a knack for capturing exactly how I imagined each character to sound and feel like! Fantastic job all around. This series will be one of my go-to's for a long time to come!

I love this series !!!!!!!!!!
First lets start off with the characters. Haven is a kicka$$ female. She is smart, courageous, and loyal to her best friend. Bell (prince and Haven's best friend) is thoughtful and sincere { in a world that doesn't promote those characteristics}. Archeron- sexy, strong-willed, tragic, and a born leader. Stolas- sexy, sassy, manipulative, dark ,dangerous, but surprisingly helpful. These are just a few of the characters in the book. It does has some amazing supporting characters also.
Without giving away too many spoilers, the plot of the book is that Bell is captured and Haven sets off to find him. To rescue him she must break the evil Queen's curse. With the help of Archeron and Stolas (and many others) she sets off on the journey. Along the way, as expected, they run into so many complications and adventures.
This book was a truly magical experience and Audrey Grey gives so much detail and description with her writing that I feel like I am there. The character development and action on this story is top notch.
Venessa Moyen does an amazing job of bringing the characters to life and keeping the listener engaged.
100% I recommend this series!!!

Lacking details.
There were several points in the book where I was wondering what was going on and how they got from one place to another. I felt like there was a good storyline however there wasn’t enough detail to complete the story.

Good Solid Story
While this is not my cup of tea it was a very good story. It started out with a bang, but after a few chapters it kind of dragged a bit. It was a very good way to get through my day at work. The narrator was very good and I enjoyed her performance of the story. I would recommend this audiobook to my friends and family.

Warning: Ends in the middle of the story
This is an enjoyable book, well written and well narrated. However I wouldn’t even says it ends on a cliff hanger, it just ... ends. Without having even reached a crescendo or a turning point. A habit with YA novels I find deeply irritating - each book should feel like a complete story, with more to tell if there’s a sequel, not one story cut up into pieces.

Runes, shadows and bound souls.
This is the first book in this series, and honestly it is extremely good. Both the author and the narrator do such an incredible job bringing this story to life, the way the surroundings are described is done so well. Smells, tastes everything is described perfectly. The world building is progressive and fascinating, from what I can tell so far it all is connected to the nocatice Queen and the curse. I won't say more than that because it will spoil things, I will mention some of the creatures in this are seriously terrifying. The way magic is used in this is very intriguing, I'm a little jealous actually. I'd love it if I had magic like Havens, she can do some pretty cool stuff. All of the characters are interesting and different, I love them all. Though my favourite is Stolas, something about him just really draws me to him. He is quite the mystery, I'm still trying to understand his motivation in book one. He appears as a bad guy, but then he does something completely unexpected. And I have to say the narrator does an impeccable job with him, it's both a mix of sultry and edgy. I can't wait to dive into book 2.

Oath Taker
The beginning did not hook me but I kept on reading thinking it might change. I was so glad that I did because things started to go downhill for Haven (our main female character). I really loved her personality because she does not take any rubbish and fights back. She is not weak. I liked this because usually the female characters in YA always start of as being stupid which I hate. Not so in this book.
The book is full of intrigue and suspense and is fast paced. There is more going on that we do not know and the secondary characters have there own secrets.
There is no sexual content with some violence. I can't remember if it had profanity.
There is some LGTB (two of the secondary characters). One of the secondary character who is gay has a beauty and the beast element to his romance but we don't get the full story since this is from multiple POVs. We will find out more in the coming books in the series.

Got me hooked!
struggled at the beginning to understand what was going on with the audio book. read the e book for about the first 14 chapters then when I understood it the rest flew past.
Good plot got me hooked, great well rounded characters. I felt some of the POVs were are random times. Cannot wait to read the second one.

Oathtaker: Kingdom of runes, book 1
I was intregued what this story would be like and I have not read or listened to this author before. From the start the story and the narration grabbed my attention. I love the way the you can see the characters developed, this is a first part of a bigger story and I am looking forward to finding out what happens in the rest of the books. You can feel the story progressing and at different stages I felt that the story could take different routes and you have to keep reading to find out which way the story will be developed.

Grest book, really great narrator.
After enjoying the first audiobook and I will definitely get the second one as long as it has the same Narrator!
I really like the dark vs. light influences that are competing for our heroine's attention. My preference is for the Lord of Shadow because he seems to appreciate Haven 's nature and I love it when he calls her Beastie . The Sun Lord in comparison is prejudiced of her mortality and obsessef with his apparent superiority in being immortal. Big. Deal. In the end it is Hayden who can save them all from the darkness...
I enjoyed the build up between Haven and her two leading men - love/hate creates delicious tension in a book without being explicit.
