Publisher's Summary

The great Norse myths are woven into the fabric of our storytelling - from Tolkien, Alan Garner and Rosemary Sutcliff to Game of Thrones and Marvel Comics. They are also an inspiration for Neil Gaiman's own award-bedecked, best-selling fiction. Now he reaches back through time to the original source stories in a thrilling and vivid rendition of the great Norse tales. Gaiman's gods are thoroughly alive - irascible, visceral, playful and passionate - and the tales carry us from the beginning of everything to Ragnarök and the twilight of the gods. Galvanised by Gaiman's prose, Thor, Loki, Odin and Freya are irresistible forces for modern listeners, and the crackling, brilliant writing demands to be heard around an open fire on a freezing, starlit night.

Mythology at its best

Enthralling mythology tails that keep me sitting in my car listening long after my journey home had finished

Great book! Fantastic narration

Neil Gaiman does a phenomenal job at illustrating the stories of Norse gods and goddesses and his narration brings great life to each character. A pleasure to listen, I wish there were more!

Simplistic and boring

I found myself zoning out and often bored by the stories despite their brevity and variation. It felt childish and uninspired. Didn't bother to finish. Neil Gaiman's performance was lacklustre and didn't help.

Who doesn't love Thor?

Excellent and entertaining introduction to Norse mythology. Covered the major points well. You really wonder how the gods tolerated Loki for so long.

Delightful!

The stories really begin from chapter six onwards, and then they are fantastic stories. Neil Gaiman reads them well too - very absorbing!

An exceptional journey

What a wonderfully written novel this was. Gaiman's storytelling is exceptional; he gives just enough detail to place oneself within the exciting old Nordic world, but not too much that nothing is left to the imagination. Don't want to say much more than that. Superb listen. Well worthy of your time.

Love for Neil Gaiman

What you expect from Neil Gaiman; engaging and beguiling. The myths provide a great insight into Norse culture. Only disappointment is that the myths pale in comparison to Neil's other stories and I was expecting the same level of beauty.

Beautifully told and read

A pleasure to listen to. Since this was my first time through the Norse myths, I was equally amazed at how closely Tolkien follows

A sublime retelling.

A fantastic retelling of Snorri's and the Poetic Edda. Gaiman has a voice like honey and breathes life into the mythology like the poets of old.

I will be revisiting these chapters again and again.
