About this listen

From the author of the Themis Files and the Take Them to the Stars series comes a new, riveting story of first contact.

What kind of message would you have sent into space?

I wouldn’t have.

Why not?

Because they might hear it, and then they might come.

A mysterious radio signal is picked up from a neighboring star system. A group of experts is brought to the floor of the Grand Canyon to investigate its origin and its meaning as the planet suffers one natural disaster after another. Cut off from the rest of the world, they must question everything, including each other, if they hope to solve the mystery.

What they discover could be the difference between life as we know it—and the end of the world.

Very sweet, smart and engaging short story. I found the voice actors all really great. I loved the story and the characters.

This is less a book than a radio play, and I'm here for it! Audible has a series of pretty diverse short stories and novellas included as part of Audible Plus, and I'm working my way through them. this was one of my favourites, a story read by a full cast exploring the possibility of alien communication. Generally the voices are very good, but (as an Australian) the Australian child was laughably bad - from the fact that he starts with Ma'am (we don't do that, a child might call an adult in authority, particularly a teacher 'Miss' but never Ma'am) to his squeaky little voice. But that's a fairly minor point. The plot is interesting, intriguing and at one point very tense. The ending made me cry - and that's all I'm saying, because the less you know the better. Listen to it yourself and you'll see.

A moving and fun radio play

Voice acting was great, story and characters became more interesting very quickly and the “science” was explained just enough to let the fiction shine

Slow burn sweet sci-fi

Why is the General in charge of scientists so ill-informed about science? All experts working on important project and yet an impatient stupid person in charge. Otherwise story seems interested. Not sure I can make it through the General’s stupidity though.

Annoying character
