Sarah Wright woke up a few times after parties in strange places - but the morgue's a first. At 18, she's eager for a taste of independence, moving out of state to attend college. However, soon after escaping the body cooler, she makes two startling realizations: vampires are real and she is one. There's nothing quite like an untimely death to ruin plans. Sarah Wright knows she’s in for a rough week when a ghost asking for help is the least frightening thing with which she has to deal. A month after waking up as a vampire, unlife is feeling pretty sweet. Her mood swings are easing off, she’s got a decent boyfriend, and best of all, the parents let her slide on being lazy. They understand it’s a little awkward to keep a job when daylight can kill her. Oh, and the whole magical powers thing is pretty cool, too. I’m one placement away from becoming a fully fledged London detective. It’s bad enough that my last assignment before I qualify is with Supernatural Squad. But that’s nothing compared to what happens next. Brutally murdered by an unknown assailant, I wake up 12 hours later in the morgue - and I’m very much alive. I don’t know how or why it happened. I don’t know who killed me. All I know is that they might try again.

A girl suddenly vanishes from her world and finds herself drifting in and out of consciousness in a world of pure darkness. The only insight into her precarious situation is a prompt opening before her eyes indicating that the system failed to delete her. The doggedly optimistic and naive teenager, Naomi, is reborn as a monster into a fantastical world governed by the rigid rules of a suspiciously game-like system; a world full of magic and danger where the familiar mingles with the inexplicable.

Story
Alexis Silver has always defied convention: In the 1920s, she tried to attend college. Oh, by the way, she’s also a mermaid. When a well-to-do woman hires her to find her missing adventurer brother, Alexis feels like she’s landed straight in the middle of the sort of action movie they just don’t make anymore. The man’s trail leads all over the globe, but she suspects he’s not dead - yet. An international mining conglomerate evidently wants whatever the missing explorer has found, and they’re more than willing to kill anyone who gets in their way. Even mermaids.
Publisher's Summary
Brooklyn Amari knew not to get in a car with a stranger. When a man tried to lure her - she killed him.
As if taking a life at the tender age of ten wasn’t bad enough, her childhood home burned to the ground two years later. She doesn’t remember how she survived, but she’s felt a pull toward the conflagration ever since. After a troubled patch in her teens, she’s become a respectable firefighter, rushing again and again into the inferno that almost killed her. A routine sweep-and-clear during a hotel blaze takes a deadly turn, but also explains how she escaped death 11 years ago: she’s probably a demon.
Brooklyn had always enjoyed having psychic abilities, but wings?
She’s still trying to come to terms with what she might be when she experiences a vision of an arsonist planting an enchanted bomb, but the Fire Marshal’s office is ill-equipped to handle magic. Since she’s the most paranormal thing they’ve got, they offer her a temporary promotion.
Unfortunately, she soon finds herself neck-deep in an investigation that goes straight over her head.
And oh yeah - she’s supposed to destroy the world.

I like her nonchalant attitude
This is the second book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to another. Brooklyn is strong-willed, blunt, telekinetic and stronger than your typical female. Magic and special capabilities and creatures are not unheard of in this world. But one day she grows wings, horns and armor and is clueless to why or how. Realizing she has an edge, the Fire Marshalls ask for her to help investigate some crimes. She begins to learn more about her new found capabilities and what she is. She’s not the only one with wings. This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Carrie Burgess ). She did well reading this book. Each character is read with the same cadence, but this it does not distract from the book, and it is still an enjoyable listen. She does inject the flippant attitude of the main character and thus adds a degree of humor to the entire book. There are no explicit sex scenes, or excessive violence. There is swearing. Narrator made me feel like I was in the story!
I really enjoyed the way the author played on words, “accused of being an adult”. The narrator did an excellent job with using various tons for multiple characters including feminine and gangster variations.

Absolutely thrilling!
The Narrator does an incredible job of taking the listener through the twists and turns of the plot that the author has developed. Her voice is engaging, and does a great job of speaking as the characters. The advancement of Brooklyn's character through the audiobook is extremely interesting! You will absolutely love listening to this audiobook!

Fun and unique paranormal adventure...........
Nascent Shadow is action packed from start to finish with lots of intricate world building and some comedic relief from the main character, Brooklyn Amari. Brooklyn is a contradictory mix of personality traits: she seems like a typical young adult one minute - playing video games, eating junk food and thinking mostly of herself, but she is a firefighter dedicated to saving people the next. She had a typical childhood on one hand - average student of a single mom, but she killed a child molester at the age of 10 and had her house burn down around her two years later. Although her mom has minor magical powers, Brooklyn is telekinetic and suddenly discovers all kinds of dormant magical powers when she saves a fellow firefighter and herself from certain death. What follows is an interesting adventure of Brooklyn discovering more about her abilities and background, using her skills to find an evil mage setting magical firebombs, and meeting some new and potentially life changing coworkers, neighbors and friends. I look forward to watching Brooklyn figure out just what she really is in future books in what promises to be a great paranormal series. Carrie Burgess does an excellent job with the narration. I had a little difficulty accepting her as Brooklyn's voice at first because Burgess narrates another series I enjoy, but her narration is so smooth and practiced that I quickly became lost in the story. Although she doesn't differentiate overly between characters, Brooklyn does the majority of the speaking, and I easily followed the story line. Hopefully, Burgess will be the narrator of any future books in this series. I received a copy of this audiobook at my request in exchange for this honest review.

Grabbed my attention immediately!!
I really enjoyed the storyline of this audiobook. This is a new genre for me, however, I was pleasantly surprised at how the author grabbed my attention in the first chapter. I found the narration to be very crisp and clear and it was delivered at a good measured pace. I find myself looking forward to the next book in his series. I highly recommend this book ...

Loved the story
This was an awesome story with great characters. I could not get past the narrator though so I ended up getting the Kindle version of this story. I ended up getting so engrossed into the story and feel like if there could be a different narrator for this book, it would be an awesome audiobook since the actual writing was well done. I love it when the series has good world building. It lets you know that the author really took time with a story. I will definitely read more from this author.
