About this listen

Motherhood is the true hero's journey - which is to say that it can be as harrowing as it is joyful, and enlightening as it is exhausting. For Jungian psychoanalyst Lisa Marchiano, this journey is not just an adventure of diaper bags and parent-teacher conferences, but one of intense self-discovery.

In Motherhood, Marchiano draws from a deep well of Jungian analysis and symbolic research to present a collection of fairytales, myths, and fables that evoke the spiritual arc of raising a child from infancy through adulthood.

Divided into three major segments similar to the stages of a hero's initiatory journey, (Descent, Sojourn, and Return), Motherhood charts how events like pregnancy, the calamities of childhood, and the empty-nest experience are all parts of an odyssey to which every mother receives an invitation. Here, Marchiano emphasizes that when you take up that invitation, it will lead to an adventure into the wild frontier of your own soul. And once you return from this inner journey, you'll possess the treasured knowledge need to clarify your values, embrace your disowned parts, and claim the mantle of motherhood in the full bloom of your empowerment.

I really loved this book, I feel like I healed as the book went on. I feel like I can breathe easier, like a weight has been lifted from my chest. This book is a gift to all mother's, going deep, in true Jungian style ! a work of art the way it has been put together, weaving the shadow work through along with the fairy tales and the real life examples. I'll be referring to this book over the years to come

this book is a journey, one worth taking!!

Thank you Lisa. This book took me on a profound and whimsical journey. As a mother since age 16, the book reaffirmed what my heart and intuition know to be true. Just the ‘noise’ of what had become my life’s construction had dimmed this innate knowing.
The fairytales and stories are having such an impact on how I look at life. I’m actively looking underneath things to find more meaning and truth. I had a few moments reading it that actually activated numinous experiences for me. Wow!
I stumbled upon the book entirely new to Jungian psychology; now I can’t get enough. Thank you Lisa xx

Desperate for some perspective and self knowing, I embarked on a mission to find a book that would help me through my rage and darkness as I mother my two toddler sons. I am forever grateful I found this wealth of gold. Held and comforted by the narrator Xe (whose voice I could listen to forever!) I began to listen slowly. Chapter by chapter I found loving acceptance, compassion and curiosity for the Mother that I am. I also ordered a hard copy for myself, and to loan to my friends and look forward to welcoming my shadows as they bring wisdom and ferocity into my ongoing life journey. If you’re reading this review, don’t hesitate. Download the book. Listen. Be ready to transform your journey of Motherhood.
