Light Hearted Space Opera

Mimic is a really interesting character and the beginning was quite engaging. The story is light and prob more a teen story yet I really enjoyed it and liked that it wasn’t emotionally draining.

Reasonable story but soooo slow and wet

This has what could be a reasonable story, but it is sooooo slow. The writer goes over the same boring tropes over and over again. It is soooooooooo boring. And rather insulting to some extent, like he thinks we can't understand a concept so he has to beat our brains to death with it. Yes we get it already, move on.

It's also really wet. Like the author is trying to demonstrate how woke he is all the time rather than actually telling the story. The jokes are contrived and cheap, just like the prose. It's a shame because the underlying story might have had some legs.

As it is though, it was torture to get through this book. I spent the whole time wondering if it would pick up the pace a bit (and stop repeating the same ground) when Mimic actually went to war, however the recording ENDED JUST BEFORE THE WAR STARTED. Probably a blessing really, it was killing me as it was.

Interesting premise, but I've read better

This is a good light listen, but don't pay a lot for it. :) Not much that is really surprising, but a good storyline and charcter development.... no I can't say that. I think the greatest flaw that keeps this from being a great story is the shallow characters. Bad is Really bad, niave is Really naive, and good people almost break their arms patting each everyone backs including their own. Just in case we readers couldn't tell that these are the Good Guys (tm).

Love it! Great sci-fi adventure!

I like it a lot. It's got a decent balance of the various aspects of a good story, with an appreciable focus on adventure. the only two issues I had:
1.) Idle conversation. There are times when the characters find themselves at a juncture, an "in-between point," where they have a reasonable amount of time to catch their breath, but the idle chitchat goes on unusually long, while I'm thinking "surely the bad guys are catching up with them by now?" Pleasant banter notwithstanding, I DO like the characters' camaraderie.
2.) The part with Gomierez whispering to Laser he "took something from her." I don't want to assume, but given the trend in story writing tending towards including realistic drama to make it more appealing, I felt it might've had to do with rape. I don't want to assume, but my mind was stuck on that and I almost couldn't finish the story. I have heard a lot of friends of mine talk about their victim-experiences, so it's become a sensitive topic for me, so much to the point the mere mention is a potential conversation killer. But regardless, I made it through and I'm thoroughly enjoying the books. Can't wait to start the next one!
