About this listen

This is the story of Barbara and Larry Savage's sometimes dangerous, often zany, but ultimately rewarding 23,000-mile global bicycle odyssey, which took them through 25 countries in two years. Miles from Nowhere is an adventure not to be missed!

Along the way, these near-neophyte cyclists encountered warmhearted strangers eager to share food and shelter, bicycle-hating drivers who shoved them off the road, various wild animals (including a roof ape and an attack camel), sacred cows, rock-throwing Egyptians, overprotective Thai policeman, motherly New Zealanders, meteorological disasters, bodily indignities, and great personal joys. The stress of traveling together constantly for two years tested and ultimately strengthened the young couple's relationship.

As their trip ends, you'll find yourself yearning for Barbara and Larry to mount back up and keep pedaling. It's a story that makes you feel like you've grown right along with the author.

Liked listening to Barb and Larry’s adventures through some remote places. A great journey! Almost had to abandon it when Jeff joined due to the narrator’s truly horrendous New Zealand accent (? A mixture of the artful Dodger from Oliver and a South African).

Interesting!

loved how candidly it was told.
the only thing that spoiled it was the worst attempt at a kiwi accent I have ever heard.

fabulous story

worst Kiwi accent ever lol but otherwise was a great story and narration. I originally thought it was a recent story but was set in the late 70s. It was very interesting to hear how somethings have changed and some haven't.

great adventure story

The honesty of the story. Inspiring. I listened to it while going for the Guiness around the world record.

Incredible story

Interesting travelogue. Perhaps too much dialogue. The narrator is good except for the accents… oh my goodness are they are a mess. But if that sort of thing doesn’t bother you, you’ll enjoy this story.

Interesting time capsule

interesting story, but the NZ accents were terrible...if you can't do it, please don't try. So painful to listen to.

Narrator shouldn't attempt NZ accent....

I loved the story. Exciting, inspiring and fun. What it ruined it for me was the annoying accents. So silly and unnecessary.

Great story, annoying reading

Worst kiwi accent ever

I enjoyed the story, but I didn't like the accents. It was a nice thought, but some of them were really difficult to listen to. Especially the Kiwi.

sorry, but that kiwi accent was awful
