About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Dying isn't any fun...but at least it's a living.

Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonise the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there's a mission that's too dangerous - even suicidal - the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.

Mickey signed on to escape from both bad debts and boredom on Midgard.

After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal...and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

When he goes missing and is presumed dead at the hands of deadly indigenous creatures, Mickey8 reports for duty and their troubles really begin.

The minimalist use of sound effects were a great addition to the fantastic story. Straight onto book 2.

Great production.

Mickey 7 is a really interesting story. There are fun characters. Some well thought out thought experiments. A fun read.

Very entertaining with a great concept

The concept of this story was really interesting and is what drew me in to give it a go. The reality did not quite measure up to the promise. I did enjoy it and I liked Mickey in all of his incarnations and his close friends. Marshall is a prick, no questions, to the point of being predictable unfortunately.
I did really enjoy the flashback history sections, and think the world building is good to the point that I would like to know more. I also wanted to know more about the indigenous inhabitants of the planet. Maybe there will be more in the sequel.
Great narration from John Pirhalla with cameo's from Katharine Chin.

Didn't quite meet my expectation

This is a great story from an author who is capable of mixing hard science with humour and strong characterisation. Intertwined with the story is an exploration of the many, many challenges that any future interstellar colony missions could face, from cosmic radiation through to biological warfare with local intelligent species. Clever, fun, and interesting.

Liked the dry sense of humour of the main character. It was an interesting premise that expendables were used to do all the dangerous jobs required. Am looking forward to continuing the series as well as watching the streaming version.

Interesting sci-fi.

Good simple book to listen to if you don't think deeply about how poorly women are portrayed.

Entertaining enough

Lightweight but diverting. Characters are mostly stereotypical and the aliens are, eh, giant insects.
The females are particularly so - simpering, jealous and weepy.
Still, done with a gentle humour that made it an easy ride.

Diverting

Entertaining. Interesting enough to stay with it until the end, although one dimensional. Could have been way more interesting with bigger twists and world building and engagement.
